L’imparfait By: Adil Mufti • The imperfect tense is a simple tense, and it consists of one word. • For all verbs (except être) the imperfect stem is: • The imperfect endings are all the same for all verbs. • The imperfect of être has an irregular stem et- and the rest is the same. • The imperfect of être is used to tell where people were or how they were feeling. • It is not used to describe what they were doing.

  2. Imparfait is used when… • Things you used to do • Progressive action(was/ were + ing) • Circumstances of an event • time and weather • outward appearance • emotional state of mind • external circumstances • other action in progress
