Grants for Science Projects Addressing Air Quality and Climate Change
The Monterey Bay Air Pollution Control District is offering $5,000 grants for undergraduate students in the Monterey Bay/Santa Cruz area. The grants aim to support science and technology projects that enhance the understanding of air quality and climate change issues. Proposals should be 5-6 pages long, including an application form, abstract, project work plan, timeline, budget, and conclusion. The Monterey Bay Air Pollution Control District is awarding $5,000 grants • “For science and technology projects that advance the understanding of relevant Air Quality and Climate Change issues.” • Only for undergraduate students in the Monterey Bay/Santa Cruz area. • What is the Monterey Bay Air Pollution Control District? • http://www.mbuapcd.org/about-us/who-are-we.html
Typical length • Average length tends to be 5-6 pages, including (typically): • One page Application form • One page Title/Abstract • Two to three page project work plan, including • Project Description • Project Goals • Methods • Expected Deliverables/Outcomes • Half-page Timeline • Half-page Budget • Two to three sentences for the Conclusion/Summary
Project topics • You can take one of many different approaches towards your project: • Examples: • Creating a phone app • Analyzing the local benefits of alternative transportation • Collecting meteorological and pollution data • A more comprehensive list of possible projects can be found in the project’s Attachment A: • http://people.ucsc.edu/~gmoulds/CMPE185/AE_AttachmentA_CE185.pdf • As this is a technical course, you may not choose the suggested “Clean Air Video” nor the “Particulate Pollution” Informational Brochure • You do not need to carry out this project, but you will need to design it.
Individual or group project? • You may design projects individually or in groups of two students working together. • Each of you will need to write and submit your own proposal. • Any group-designed project must list all students involved in the project design.
Assignment requirements • Complete the Air Expressions Application form and submit a printout of the forms. • http://people.ucsc.edu/~gmoulds/CMPE185/AE_Grant_Application_CE185.doc • Complete the following sections: • Project title and abstract • Project work plan • Project timeline • Total requested budget • Conclusion/summary • Adhere to application format • You should insert your text into the required format
Assignment requirements (cont.) • Submit information described in Attachment B • http://people.ucsc.edu/~gmoulds/CMPE185/AE_AttachmentB_CE185.pdf • Not all projects will need the draft illustration mentioned in Attachment B section 3, but for many projects this will be useful. • Each item listed in Section 3 of Attachment B should have its own dedicated section. • There may be some redundant information across sections, but you should not copy/paste language exactly.
Special consideration: Your budget • The following budget items are not allowed: • Staff or student salaries • Contractor expenses • University overhead charges. • Any equipment purchased with the grant money will become property of UCSC. • Material costs and transportation expenses are appropriate, but your requests should be reasonable. • Specify these costs in your itemized budget.
