Summary • Dante and Vigil come across the third pit of the 8th circle which consists of those who committed simony. • Simony-these sinners used their position in the church for personal monetary gain. • The sinners are punished by having their heads shoved in the rocks while their feet are set on fire and are burning. • Dante then calls out Pope Nicholas III and Virgil carries Dante away to continue on to the next circle.

  4. Images The image shows the punishment of the simonists. The simonists were punished being turned upside down and having their feet set on fire. Simonists were those that basically stole money from the church for their own personal gain.

Details • Dante and Virgil are located in the third pit of the 8th circle. • This is where all of the simonists are punished for taking money from the church and using it for their own personal gain. • Dante ends up calling out Pope Nicholas III and Virgil takes him down towards the next circle.
