Outreach to American Indians • As AmericanIndian liaison for FGDC, numerous activities are involved • Recognize the need to learn from and share knowledge with American Indians • Annual report describes many of these activities and on going programs • FGDC collaborating with Indian governments and organizations to be more self sufficient • Increasing training and educational opportunities to improve their environmental studies and planning

  2. Outreach to American Indians • We can assist Indian Country by: • Empowering the tribes self sufficiency • Enable tribes to work more effectively with Federal, state & local governments • Maintain and protect data that is sensitive • Provide new ways of managing GIS.

  3. Outreach to American Indians • Creating Metadata • Common protocols using Clearinghouse • Common sets of data for applications and Framework • Ability to transfer and integrate data • Opportunities for resources-Partnerships

FGDC and Indian Country • FGDC provides new ways of managing and using geographic information: • documenting and maintaining data - Metadata Standard • common protocols for access and dissemination using the Internet- Clearinghouse • common sets of data for GIS applications - Data Framework • ability to transfer and integrate data - Data and Technology Standards • opportunity to leverage resources - Partnerships

FGDC and Indian Country • The FGDC can help to: • Empower tribes position as sovereign nations to take better care of future generations • Enable tribes to work more effectively with other tribes as well as with state, local and federal government agencies • Maintain and protect data that is proprietary or sensitive

  6. Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute • SIPI is a BIA Indian School • Quarterly satellite broadcasts to 30 TCUs • Great connection to community, allows maps, documents and computer displays by presenter, excellent school to career opportunity • Promotes tribal self efficiency and communication

  7. Intertribal GIS Council • Builds cooperation in managing native lands and resources through spatial data technologies • Co-sponsor in planning and development of their Annual Conferences • Updated directory of GIS courses and programs at TCUs • Creating scholarship and internships • Updating tribal boundaries with EPA

  8. National Indian Business Association • NIBA-national trade association to promote American Indian business development through technology, education and communication • Co-sponsor of upcoming meeting “Native American’s in Technologies” • Creating Indian economic development opportunities • NSDI as building block for their future

  9. Education • University of Buffalo, UCGIS • Coordinating the development of graduate fellowships for American Indians in Geographic Info. Science • American Indian Heritage Foundation assist in nominations for program • American Indian Higher Education Con. • ASU, Dartmouth, UNC, UWI, TCUs

  10. BIA/NAALEA • BIA, National Native American Law Enforcement Association, training and education for technology, communication • Co-sponsoring upcoming NAALEA/BIA annual meeting • Crime mapping updates from DOJ • Development of crime mapping curriculum in BIA Police Academy

National Consortium for Rural Geospatial Innovations in America • RGIS national non-profit educational and governmental set of programs funded through Dept. of Agriculture • MOU includes 7 university project sites, includes TCUs, to develop new decision making tools for infrastructure, transportation, natural resources and economic development for self sufficiency

  12. FWS and NOAA Training Centers • In partnership with NOAA and FWS, developing workshops and training sessions available to tribal entities regarding geographic data coordination. • FWS GIS Users Workshop • Coastal Metadata and GIS for Conservation Professionals courses
