  3. Counselor Breakdown To meet with Paxon’s Counselors: • Students: Visit guidance office in between classes, during lunch, put in a pass at guidance front desk, or email your counselor. • Parents: Call or email the counselor to make an appointment

  6. Attendance/Reporting of Absences • Upcoming absences should be reported to classroom teachers and the Attendance Clerk (Mrs. Bouie, ext. 116) • You may Cc your counselor on emails sent • Students are responsible for work missed during absences

PSAT/ACT/SAT • PSAT: • October 10, 2018 during the school day at Paxon. • National Merit, National Achievement, and National Hispanic Scholarship qualifications are based on 11th grade PSAT scores • ACT: • Register at www.ACT.org • Take ACT with Writing • Students can take practice tests and question of the day • Offered in September, October, December, February, April, and June • SAT: • Register atwww.collegeboard.com • Students can take practice tests and question of the day • Offered in October, November, December, January, March, May, and June *See your Counselor for waivers if you qualify* Don’t delay completing college applications because of test scores!!!

ACT or SAT Waiver Qualifications The student.... • Is enrolled in or eligible to receive free/reduced lunch • Family income falls within the Income Eligibility Guidelines set by the USDA (see counselor for chart) • Family receives public assistance • Lives in federally subsidized public housing, a foster home, or is homeless • Is a ward of the state or an orphan For SAT: Once 1st waiver is used, 2nd waiver will automatically apply to next test (should come up in SAT account). *See your Counselor for waivers if you qualify* Don’t delay completing college applications because of test scores!!!

Paxon Expectations Maintain a 2.0 Unweighted GPA Pass ALL Courses If an “F” is earned in a course at the end of a semester, communicate with your counselor IMMEDIATELY to prevent losing magnet seat Retake Courses Failed on FLVS or private summer school (no later than the start of the next school year)

  12. Community Service • Paxon SAS requires that all students perform a minimum of 75 hours of community service. (100 for FAS for Bright Futures) • Students cannot be paid for the service, and it must be performed at a non-profit agency. Be very careful with doing service at/through religious institutions – not every thing counts • Community Service should be meaningful. • To eliminate headaches later, students must complete the pre-approval form BEFORE starting the service hours

Community Service For each different activity completed, 3 forms must be turned in to guidance • Community Service Pre-Approval Form • Community Service Log Form • Student Reflections Form • Forms are available on Paxon’s website: psas.duvalschools.org under the guidance tab and on the Paxon guidance website at paxonguidance.weebly.com • All completed community service documentation is due to the school counseling office no later than April 23, 2019

College Planning – Get Involved NOW!!! • Extracurricular Activities: Clubs, Sports, etc. • Community Service • Explore your passions • In terms of college applications: • Colleges are looking for individuals’ dedication and leadership • More time spent on fewer activities looks better than a few hours scattered across many

College Planning • Colleges visit Paxon to speak to students (Lunch) • Schedule posted outside of the school counseling office, on the Paxon school counseling website, linked on school website, and said during announcements • Students must have teacher permission to miss class to attend if scheduled during a lunch when they have class or during class time (extremely rare).

Develop Grit for Your Greatest Possible Future • Build resilience/grit (ex. “It’s too hard.’) • Absolute success is not always good • Self-advocate • Accept the responsibilities for your actions (sometimes we make decisions that we can’t change, sometimes it is my fault, etc.) Search “college admissions resilience” or “college admissions grit” for articles on this subject.
