This report presents the results of a survey conducted by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services regarding certification examinations and training in the agriculture industry. The survey collected demographic information and opinions about the examination process. The report also includes passing rates and insights into study habits and knowledge gaps among examinees.

  2. Overview • The intent of the Survey was to collect demographics about persons seeking certification and opinions about the examination process and industry training. • Survey was anonymous AND voluntary • Survey was well accepted (96.2% return)

  3. Overview • There were 274 approved examinees • 213 persons actually took the exams (77.7% of approved applicants). • 205 persons returned the survey forms (96.2% of approved applicants). • Some questions on the surveys were not answered and this was recorded in the raw data spreadsheets.

  6. For 57.2% of all examinees, this was their first attempt at this category exam. Lawn Category had about ½ of the examinees re-testing.

  9. Estimate the Time Spent Studying • Question was not structured properly resulting in inaccurate responses. • Question will be re-designed to report the total amount of time spent studying in hours. • Will have to re-survey to develop this information.

  10. Discussion • WDO (10.9%) and GHP (9.3%) had highest percentage of persons who indicated they did NOT utilize the Reference Materials. • Fumigation had a 100% affirmative response.

  11. Discussion • Lawn (7.1%) and WDO (4.5%) had highest percentages of persons who did NOT think there was enough time. • Fumigation had 100% affirmative responses.

Discussion • Lawn category had highest percentage (5.9%) of persons who did NOT think the exam tested their knowledge of Insect Identification. • Fumigation category had highest percentage (36.4%) of persons who did NOT think the exam tested their knowledge of Insect Life Cycles. • Fumigation category had highest percentage (36.4%) of persons who did NOT think the exam tested their knowledge of Insect Habitat.

Discussion • Fumigation had the highest percentage (9.1%) of persons who did NOT think that the exam tested their knowledge of Insect Control Methods. • Lawn had the highest percentage (1.4%) of persons who did NOT think that the exam tested their knowledge of State Regulations. • Fumigation had the highest percentage (36.4%) of persons who did NOT think the exam tested their knowledge of Business Operations.

Discussion • Surprised by the responses (87.5%) that indicated that the exams tested their knowledge of business operations as they are not specifically structured to do so. • Possible that it was actually a regulatory question (that does control a business operation) that was confused with this question.

  15. Other results • For those who responded that they had attended a class or school to prepare for the exam: • We asked them to identify the school/instructor. No particular value (or surprises) to the survey. (Results are within the spreadsheets).

Conclusions • 57.2% of the examinees were taking the exam for the first time • Self Study (49.5%) and Self Study and Class/School (30.4%) were utilized the most. • (19.1%) utilized JUST a class/school. • 64.3% of the examinees passed their exam. • Credits- • Would like to thank Terry Montgomery for administrating and collecting the surveys as well as for maintaining a consistent examination program for the Bureau.
