INTRODUCTION The Department of Agriculture has the mandate of coordinating and advising the Assembly on issues related to Agriculture, as well introducing and promoting Modern Agriculture Technologies to Farmers and all players along the Agriculture Value Chain.
PLANTING FOR FOOD AND JOBS2019 • Farmers are to procure subsidized fertilizers and seeds from registered input dealers in the municipality • All fertilizers and seeds will be bagged with PFJ labels. • Fertilizers to be sold in the three northern regions will be bagged in only 25 Kg bags. • Fertilizers to be sold in the southern sector will be bagged in 50 Kg bags.
REARING FOR FOODS AND JOBS The Ga South Municipal is been considered for two types of livestock on pilot basis • Cockerels • Pigs A list of 55 farmers has been submitted for consideration. This will be lunched soon.
PLANTING FOR EXPORT AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT This is aimed at providing alternative livelihood to farmers and potential farmers in the cultivation of cash crops for export that would bring about economic relief. Coconut is the crop selected for Ga South. A list of 81 farmers have submitted for consideration and approval.
FALL ARMY WORM • This is a pest whose invasion is causing a lot destruction in maize farms and in other crops. • Its activity is a treat to crop production and food security in the municipality and the country as a whole. • Government has however, provided chemicals for its control. • Farmers who observe the pest on their farms should report the Agric. Extension agent or to the Agric. Office for action and advise.
CHALLENGES • Sand winners and estate developers destroying crops on farms with impunity. • Limited number of trained technical staff. • Unavailability of input at some registered outlets. • Failure of some farmers to pay for previous PFJ (2017) inputs supplied.
WAY FORWARD • Continues education of farmers in modern agricultural technologies. • Increase capacity building for staff. • Reclamation of farm lands destroyed through sand winning activities. • Early arrival of inputs to meet the farming season.
