  2. Under Mongol Rule • The Mongols conquered Russia from • The Mongols invaded Russia in attack in 1223. The Russians were victorious but 14 years later, the Mongols surprised them in a horde attack and defeated them. • Because they were under Mongol rule, Russia was isolated off from the rest of Europe and slowed and eventually fell behind in technical advances. • They traded with Japan

Ivan the Great Ivan the III was born in 1440 and lived until 1505 He was the first significant leader of the process of territorial expansion He made a calculated plan in which he married the niece of the last Byzantine Emperor and that helped him exploit his close ties with the Orthodox church. This increased the power of the central Russian government

  4. Ivan the terrible Ivan the terrible (1530-1584) was the first Tsar of Russia. His father died when he was 3. His father requested that Ivan be the Grand Prince of Moscow. He wasn’t crowned until the age of 16 and then he adopted the name Tsar of Russia.

  5. Peter the great 1672-1725 He was an inconsistent ruler. He would behead and boil his enemies alive. Also because he didn’t want them taking his power away from him he kill off many Russian Boyars He was Tsar of Russia from 1682 to 1725

Expansion and technologic advances • After Peter the Great (officially known as Peter I) was announced the new Tsar of Russia, Russia went through a radical change in technologic advances and went through a period of expansion. • When Peter the Great traveled to Europe he was influenced greatly by their style and customs. • After all the things he saw he decided that he wanted to Modernize Russia. • He had educational and reforms, technology advances, cultural changes like appearances, and especially architecture. • They also won many wars which helped expansion

Great northern war • It lasted from 1700 to 1721 • It was fought between Sweden’s Charles XII and a collation that was made up of Russia, Denmark and Saxony-Poland and was led by Peter the Great. • It first started when collation declared war on Sweden and their allies. They took advantage that the leader, Charles XII, was only 18 and unexperienced. • After Augustus the II announced defeat and he signed the Treaty of Altranstadt. • After Russia defeated Sweden Russia had directed access to the Baltic sea which he made another trading port. He moved the capital closer to the border and named it St. Petersburg.

  8. Government and Religion • When the Mongols took over they set up a prime location for trade and payments in Moscow. So the central power shifted. • It was a bureaucracy • After they broke free from the Mongols they went through a period of government reform and they had tsars. • It was a multicultural empire
