  3. Spectrum Location X-RAY • X-rays are between Ultra Violet rays and Gamma rays in the Electromagnetic Spectrum. They have a relatively high frequency. http://www.teachnet.ie/dkeenahan/images/em%20spectrum.gif

  5. Who can see this? • Humans or animals can not see X rays because it is not on our color spectrum • The wave length is too small for us to see • Using an X-ray imager we can see them on a film sheet held up to a light source http://www.bradbyers.com/x-ray.jpg

Harms of X-rays • Over exposure to X rays can cause burns, possibly leading to death. • They can damage bone marrow • They can cause hair loss • X-rays are bad for pregnant woman and their unborn baby • They can mutate cells and cause cancer because of ionizing radiation http://www.sockshop.co.uk/cms_media/images/article-18754911-10936.jpg

Discovery • X-rays were discovered by German scientist Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. • They were discovered while he was experimenting with vacuum tubes • He named them x rays because they were an unknown radiation. • X usually stands for “unknown” • By 1900’s doctors used to take pictures (radiographs) of bones to help treat injuries Wilhelm Roentgen http://www.odec.ca/projects/2004/sitt4b0/public_html/images/roetengen.jpg

Interesting Facts • Wilhelm Roentgen received a Nobel prize for his discovery • There is a girl who claims she is able to see X-rays, she is from Russia. • Because your bones and teeth are dense and absorb more X-rays then your skin does, silhouettes of your bones or teeth are on the X-ray film while your skin seems transparent. http://science.hq.nasa.gov/kids/imagers/ems/xrays.html
