  2. HR Initiatives in a Challenging Economic Environment - From Complexity to Clarity Indian economy is considered to be a destination of opportunities in several ways – most importantly based on its market size and demography. From the beginning of last decade of previous millennium, hopes were generated that this economy would be in a position to log in growth rate closer to double digit and sustain it for long. While it did happen for sometime its tenacity and momentum could not be maintained. Currently Indian economy is faced with formidable challenges a specially rising current account deficit (CAD) and unemployment besides industrial sector has been hit hard by weak global demand, weak supply linkages, high import costs, due to rupee’s declining value and sluggish investment activities. Economic and social issues are integrally linked perhaps more now than ever before. Business enterprises are also impacted by developments in the economy. During such environment human resource is expected to play a leading role by remaining more engaged than ever, in developing and retaining talent, reducing costs and aligning its activities with the overall business strategies and initiatives for unlocking the potential for the future growth. Human resources are both cause and effect of enterprises. It is therefore necessary that continuous learning about changes that impact organisations is facilitated so that enterprises proactively develop their strategies and responses to deal with uncertainty of the future. Economic uncertainty influences the process of H R planning and strategies. Diversity in planning has unique challenges during recession; because depletion in source availability can significantly impact company’s strategies to design jobs and working system. It is the H R professionals’ ability to govern H R policies. Company’s can implement practices that will enable them not only to survive and economic downturn but to develop unique strategic options to gain competitive edge for growth. Keeping in view the present economic scenario a one day H R convention on the theme: HR Initiatives in Challenging Economic Environment from Complexity to Clarity; is organised by Gujarat Employers’ Organisation (GEO). Distinguished speakers will share their knowledge and practical experiences to help participants explore ways and means for future strategies and actions of their organisation to travel from haze of today to clarity of tomorrow.
