  1. Kingdom Protista A who’s who of the Protista Kingdom

  2. What are The five kingdoms? • Monera • PROTISTA • Fungi • Plantae • Animalia

  3. What is a Protist? Do any of these look familiar?

  4. What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Protista? • Eukaryotic • Heterotrophic and Autotrophic • Live in aquatic environments • Unicellular or multicellular • Reproduce both sexually and asexually

  5. What are the three types of protists? • Algae – the plant-like protists • Slime molds – the fungi-like protists • Protozoans – the animal-like protists

  6. Algae- The plant like protists • Key Characteristics: • Autotrophs • Use chloroplasts to make food. • Examples include Euglenoids, Dinoflagellates, Diatoms and Seaweeds.

  7. euglenoid Example: Euglena

  8. Dinoflagellates and Diatoms Example: plankton Diatoms

  9. Green Algae Provides most of the Earth’s oxygen!

  10. Brown Algae Known as kelp and used for food.

  11. Red Algae

  12. Slime molds- the fungus like protists • Key Characteristics: • Heterotrophic • Decomposers- Feed on dead plants and animals • Examples include Plasmodial slime molds, Cellular slime molds, Water molds

  13. Slime Molds

  14. Protozoans- the Animal like protists • Key Characteristics: • Heterotrophic • Most have projections used for movement. • Examples: Ciliates, Zooflagelletes, Amoeboids (Apicomplexans)

  15. Ciliates Cilia Example: Paramecium

  16. ZooFlagelletes Flagella Example: Giardia

  17. Amoeboids Example: Ameoba psuedopod

  18. Apicomplexans Example- Plasmodium (causes malaria) Inside Red Blood Cells

  19. The end
