  4. Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology – TCATs • A great place to start; gain skill competencies • Attend all day, every day • Finish in 12 to 18 to 20 months—86% placement in jobs • Affordable – TNP covers all tuition

Animal Lab Tech Aircraft / Avionics Diesel Powered Equipment Industrial Maintenance or Electrical Technology Machine Tool Technology Welding Technology Health Information Mgmt Pharmacy Technology Plastic Injection Molding/Robotics Mechatronics Surgical Technology

  6. Community College • Similar to a university setting • Typically earn an associate degree (A.A., A.S., or A.A.S.) some certificate or diploma programs • Finish in two years • Seamless transfer through TTP www.tntransferpathway.org • Affordable – TNP covers all tuition

  11. Tennessee Promise Scholarship • Why a promise and for whom • Tennessee’s economic prosperity • Benefit for all of us • Cornerstone program of Governor Haslam’s Drive to 55 initiative

Why are we driving to 55? • To increase postsecondary attainment in Tennessee from 32 percent to 55 percent by the year 2025 • Tennessee needs to produce an additional 494,000 degrees, of which technical certificates and two-year degrees are a key part • 9.65 percent of Southwest Tennessee adults have some type of postsecondary credential

  13. Tennessee Promise Scholarship • What is the promise Provide last dollar funds to cover tuition for ALL students enrolling at a: • Tennessee community college or college of applied technology • Tennessee four-year institution with associate or certificate programs

  15. Tennessee Promise Scholarship • Who applies? • YOU—open to the class of 2015 • ALL public, private, & homeschool high school graduates • GED or HiSET recipients (age 19 and younger)

  16. Tennessee Promise Scholarship • Where to apply www.tnpromise.gov Create a Log In--select a username and password • Requires SSN • Choose school from list; have until Dec. • 31st to change

  17. Tennessee Promise Application Portal Click on the “Apply Now” button on www.tnpromise.gov

  18. Tennessee Promise Application Portal Click “Create a Login” to create an account. (DEG students use same user name and password) *If you have taken dual enrollment, use your same login (DEG students use same user name and password)

  19. Tennessee Promise Application Portal Complete the application, check the box to accept terms and conditions, and click “Create my account”.

  21. Tennessee Promise Application Portal Enter the username created and click “Log In”. Answer challenge questions, image, password, etc.

Tennessee Promise Scholarship • When to apply – NOW! • Deadline is Nov. 1 • How to stay eligible • Work with a partnering organization—(REDI) • Attend two informational meetings— • Fall: College Knowledge and/or Financial Aid Workshop • Spring: AnyCollege Simulation and/or College Orientation

  25. FAFSA Application will be available starting January 1st. • You will have until February 15th to submit the FAFSA. • You/your parents do NOT have to have their taxes complete for 2014 tax year in order to complete the FAFSA. FAFSA

  27. Other Financial Aid Sources • Scholarships • Local – usually in spring • Private – more than $3 billion • Institutional – given by the school (check for priority deadlines, may have additional application process)

  29. Application Process • Prepare resume, activity record, letters of recommendation, essay (primarily for four-year schools) • Online or paper app • Proof carefully before sending and be aware of deadlines • Tips: use a professional email and Grandma-proof social media

Hit Submit – Now What? • Expect to get an email that your application has been received • Develop a relationship – be in touch with admissions representative • Respond to requests in a timely manner Acceptance and Award Letters • If this is your school choice, reply to confirm your acceptance • Establish student account with school: jWeb, @my.uu.edu, etc • Continue to respond to/with school’s communication • Expect more fees—housing and tuition deposit

Over the Summer • You will have admitted status • Respond to orientation and pre-registration opportunities • Be in touch with financial aid office—call if you are uncertain about aid offerings or to confirm that your FAFSA information is on file and updated (Sign the award letter; know your Admissions Counselor—more about that in Nov)
