  1. KNOWLEDGE FOR COLLEGE What Every Parent Should Know About : Planning for College,College Admissions, & Financial Aid

  2. Juniors!!!! • The Junior Planning Guide is available on the underclassman opportunities website. • All Juniors have been scheduled for an appointment starting 10/7. They will receive a planning guide at that time. • Plan to take the SAT after completing Math III • All Juniors will take the ACT at school on February 25, 2020.

  3. Seniors!!! • Early Action date for college admission is October 15th or November 1st. Check the website for the college you are applying to. • All seniors have had their senior conference and received a senior planning guide. These are available online under the Class of 2020 tab.

  4. Career and College Promise (CCP) • The deadline for Spring classes on Corinth campus, online or on the JCC campus is October 9th. • Directions for returning students and new students are available in Student Services. • All students must meet with an advisor at JCC. The appointment link is available on the JCC website. Appointments will open on October 5th.

Selecting a College: What Do I Consider? -Size of student population (Large vs. Small) -Community (Urban vs. Rural) -Location (In State vs. Out of State) -Student Body (Co-ed vs. Same Sex) -Campus safety Always compile information from several sources! Places to start: www.collegeboard.org & cfnc.org

  6. Plan Campus Visits -Meet with an admissions counselor -Take a campus tour -Investigate your academic program(s) -Ask about retention, job placement, and graduation -Explore their student activites -Talk with students on your own -Can’t Get There…Take an Virtual Tour at www.cfnc.org

  7. Sure, but how do I pay for it? Start with the college Admissions and Financial Aid Office Individual departments -Ask your employer -Visit Student Services Website -Consider religious, community, and professional affiliations

  8. Financial Aid Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA) -Online at www.fafsa.ed.gov -Opens October 1st!! -Determines eligibility for: Federal loans Federal grants Federal work-study

  9. Scholarships There are hundreds of sites and millions of scholarships available, you need to do research! Reliable websites: cfnc.org, scholarships.com, fastweb.com, your school website! Each school website has a scholarship page. Please visit the site CHHS Website If an agency requires a fee to assist you in finding scholarships or financial aid they are NOT reputable. DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO ANYONE FOR ASSISTANCE!

  11. Need Based….. How to get Need-Based Grants and Scholarships in 2 easy steps: • Apply to College • Remember application deadlines vary, so it is important to stay in touch with the admissions offices at your selected school. • File your Free Application for Federal State Aid (FAFSA) after October 1. Your eligibility for state and federal need-based aid is determined when you complete the FAFSA. • If you are a North Carolina resident: • List the colleges and universities you are considering attending on your FAFSA and you will be automatically considered for every state and federal need-based grant or scholarship as long as you list at least one eligible North Carolina college or university participating in these programs.

Merit Based and Other Scholarships • What are Merit-Based and Other Scholarships? • Merit-Based and Other Scholarships are not awarded based solely on financial need • Scholarships are typically awarded to students based on a special talent, achievement, skill or other qualifying factor. • Factors may include academic achievement, dramatic ability, athletic talent, leadership or other outstanding achievements or capabilities. • Different criteria such as where you live, your future plans, disability status or military service (you or a family member) may also considered.

  13. How to get Merit-Based and Other Scholarships: • Start by filing your Free Application for Federal State Aid (FAFSA)! This is the best way to ensure you will be considered for all available aid. • Merit-based and other scholarships often require separate applications, so it is never too early to start looking for these funding opportunities. You can: • Check websites!!! • Contact the college or university you are considering to see if you are eligible to apply for their merit scholarships.

  14. Many companies offer scholarships to employee’s children. Check with your HR department • NEVER PAY FOR ASSITANCE- there are many scams out there do not be taken advantage of by unscrupulous companies
