  2. goals for today • to see if everyone enrolled in the course is here • to create a waiting list for those not yet enrolled • to explain the principles used to order the waiting list • to confirm enrollment in the sections • to provide details about where to find the texts and syllabus • to provide everyone with the first reading assignment

  3. please fill out a piece of paper • name • yes or no: have you already enrolled in the course? • major or prospective major • year • are you a transfer student? • email address • answer this question in 2 or 3 sentences: • what does “digital media” mean to you? • are you an artist? [yes or no] when finished, bring your paper to the front

  4. waiting list • principles of ordering • transfers have preference over non-transfers • majors have preference over non-majors • juniors have preference over sophomores • sophomores have preference over frosh • frosh have preference over seniors • those who came the first day of class have preference over those who did not • within categories, people have been randomly assigned a position

  9. sections • sections are mandatory • all sections meet in porter college, room d240 (computer lab) • sections will be held starting next week

  10. have a section, but want to change? please fill out a second piece of paper: • name • current section assignment • rank ordering of desired section assignments • list of sections you cannot meet with • email address note the risk of changing section assignments: you will be put on a waiting list to be assigned to another section, but you will be giving up your guaranteed section assignment.

  11. section re-assignments & permission codes • on monday we have a ranked waiting list for those of you not yet enrolled, but hoping to attend; those at the top of the waiting list will be email a section assignment • section (re)assignments will be sent to you via email from one the t.a.s (alana perlin or abram stern) • sections will meet starting next week • if you have been assigned a section, permission codes will be handed out at the section meeting

  12. course texts • Noah Wardrip-Fruin and Nick Montfort (editors) The New Media Reader (MIT Press, 2003) • Rachel Greene, Internet Art (Thames and Hudson, 2004) The required texts can be purchased at The Literary Guillotine bookstore at 204 Locust Street, Santa Cruz. They are also on reserve at McHenry Library.

  13. reading assignment for next time • required The entire text of the book Internet Art by Rachel Greene. There will be a short, easy, open-book quiz on Wednesday covering the organization and contents of the book. Bring your copy to class next Wednesday (a wek from today).
