Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct Every Indiana University student is responsible for reading and understanding this Statement, as well as other expectations identified by individual schools or organizations relevant to an academic major, professional field, or on-campus residence. This Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct is intended to identify the basic rights, responsibilities, and expectations of all students and student groups to serve as a guide for the overall student experience at Indiana University.

  6. We generally serve 1000 to 1500 students per year • Alcohol/Drug Violations • Academic Misconduct • Physical/Sexual Assaults • Student Conflicts • Approximately 25% of those involve acts of misconduct What we see…

The mission of the Student Advocates Office is to assist students in resolving personal and academic problems so that they may maintain progress toward earning a degree.  The advocates are retired faculty and administrators who support student learning and development by fostering: • effective written and verbal communication with faculty and administrators, • realistic expectations for outcomes, • a clear sense of personal responsibility and values, • respect for others and the university community, • assertive, independent decision making about personal and educational goals, • healthy choices, • full use of student service resources to promote academic success and • a collaborative approach to resolving problems and addressing challenges. Why help the “bad guys”? • misconduct  bad students Review rights and responsibilities -> Student understands role Help through procedures -> Experience navigating complex systems Look at options -> Experience with decision making Reflect on situation -> What to do next time, ways to better self Make referrals -> Finding the right resources, experience reaching out Students able to continue, able to make informed choices, able to better themselves, able to reach educational and personal goals
