  1. Modeling with Modifiers James Martin High SchoolComputer Multimedia and AnimationInstructor: G. Patton

  2. 1. What is the purpose of the mesh select modifier? • The mesh select modifier allows you to create a sub-object selection so that you can modify a portion of an object independently without modifying the entire object.

  3. 2. Which type of material is used with the material modifier? • multi/sub-object

  4. 3. What is a displacement approximation modifier used for? • A displacement approximation modifier is used in conjunction with displacement mapping to deform the surface geometry of a “non-mesh” object.

  5. 4. How does applying an edit patch modifier to a parametric object differ from converting the object into an editable patch object? • An object with an edit patch modifier is not actually converted to an editable patch, allowing the base object to remain parametric.

  6. 5. When is the normalized spline modifier used? • The normalize spline modifier is used to space vertices equally along the length of a spline, allowing the line to be used as a motion path to generate a constant velocity.

  7. 6. The surface modifier generates a patch grid from what type of object? • splines

  8. 7. Why would you use the delete mesh modifier instead of deleting items at the sub-object level? • Using the modifier keeps the base object parametric.

  9. 8. What function does the tessellate modifier perform? • It subdivides faces on an object, which allows you to add smoothness for rendering.

  10. 9. What effect can be created with the displace modifier? • A moving force field effect can be created by applying the displace modifier and animating the gizmo, or using an animation as the bitmap.

  11. 10. The lattice modifier produces what type of object? • wireframe

  12. 11. What does the push modifier do? • The push modifier allows you to scale an object up or down along the normals of its faces.

  13. 12. What do the xform and linked xform modifiers allow you to do? • The xform and linked xform modifiers allow you to apply a transform to a selection of sub-objects and place it in the modifier stack.

  14. 13. How does the xform modifier differ from the linked xform modifier? • When using the linked xform modifier, the transform is controlled by the transform of a control object.

  15. 14. What does FFD stand for? • Free Form Deformation

  16. 15. Which FFD modifiers allow you to set the number of control points? • FFD box • FFD cylinder

  17. 16. If a melt modifier has a high solidity value, what effect is produced on the object? • The object melts more on the outside than the inside.

  18. 17. What does the flex modifier do? • It causes a portion of the object to “lag” as the object is moved in an animation.

  19. 18. With what is the skin modifier designed to be used? • bones systems

  20. 19. What is the main difference between world space modifiers and object space modifiers? • The effects of a world space modifier are based on world space rather than object space. • The effects change as the object is moved around in the scene, even if the object’s parameters remain unchanged. • The effects of an object space modifier are dependent on object space only. • The effects of an object space modifier do not change simply by moving the object around in the scene.

  21. 20. What is the purpose of the point cache modifier? • The point cache modifier records animation information as changes in vertex location. The vertex information is saved to a file and can be retrieved for animation playback.
