  1. Standards here, Standards there, Standards, Standards everywhere. Leslie Brodie, M.Ed., NBCT K-12 Science Coordinator Fort Smith Public Schools

  2. The Reading – Writing Connection • “The average high school science text introduces seven to ten new concepts per page and between 2,400 and 3,000 symbols overall. Teachers who wish to cover an entire textbook must introduce a new concept every two minutes. Too much emphasis on the text results in teaching science as a body of knowledge.” • (Tierney, B. and Dorroh, J., 2004, p. 14)

  7. Fist to Five 0 – This must have something to do with apples right? 1 – Isn’t that those new English Standards? I’ve heard something about those ….didn’t we adopt them in Arkansas? 2 – I’ve heard some about them and I’ve at least scanned through the standards documents. 3 – I’ve thoroughly read through the documents and I could use the terminology, but I don’t know how to implement. 4 – I k now the standards backwards and forwards; transitioning to these new standards will be a breeze! 5 – I am already ROCKING these standards in class!!!!

  8. Key Shifts in CCSS for English Language Arts • Complexity: Regular practice with complex texts and academic language • Evidence: Reading, writing, speaking and listening grounded in evidence from text, literary and informational. • Knowledge: Building knowledge through content rich nonfiction.

  10. Shared Responsibility • Subject area teachers are not responsible to teach reading and writing, rather they are responsible for teaching in the content areas and embeddingreading and writing.
