I BEGAN WITH A BASIC IDEA OF MY TITLE AND WHAT I WOULD DO IN PREPARING FOR THE ESSAY PLANNING PROCESS My first idea for the topic/title was... • - Has the internet had a lasting effect on society? PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS My first ideas for research and development of the project were... • - I would begin with brief outline and history of the internet • - Use statistical websites with graphs showing internet usage in UK • - Produce an argument on whether the internet has made family life the better. • - Advantages and Disadvantages of internet use.   5. I held a discussion with my supervisor before I began the project and the feedback I got from this was... • “Change the focus of the question to shorten down the topic, I.e. Specify the question to the UK only.” PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION As a result I made the following changes to my planning... • Changing of the subject audience from society to family life. • Ask the question of whether the internet has made family life the better or the worse to create an argument • Cutting down of the topic to just the UK. • Shorten down writing on theory of the internet and focus more on the statement question. • - Broaden it down to a certain aspect of the internet. The courses of study to which the topic relates are... • Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION My Proposed Action... • - Start with brief outline of internet and explain how it was developed. • - Then describe what family life in the UK was life before and after the internet. • - Discuss advantages and disadvantages, then discuss whether it has made family life better. • - Use statistics from sources such as the office of national statistics website to back up data. • - Most references will come from e-sources.   12. MAIN STATEMENT • - I began with explaining why the internet is vastly becoming more appropriate for our day to day society. PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS - I explained the increasing popularity of internet and social networking use with graphs and data tables like this one below... STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES EVALUATION

PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION - I then analysed the need for social networking in modern society and explained the advantages and disadvantages of using social networking PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES - I finally related my research to family life and analysed how much of an impact social networking has had on family life in the UK EVALUATION

  14. QUESTIONNAIRE PLANNING PROCESS - I gathered primary data by handing out questionnaires to a few friends and members of family. PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS - The questionnaire asked people how long do they spend on social networking sites and their opinion of the main statement. STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES - I received back 11 questionnaires and I then recorded the results using pie charts EVALUATION - I then evaluated and presented my findings

CONCLUSION PLANNING PROCESS -I finalised my decision in the first paragraph on whether I thought social networking had improved family life in the UK PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS - I then explained my decision BIBLIOGRAPHY STRENGTHS - I listed all e-sources and books I used to help me present my essay WEAKNESSES - I also used the Harvard referencing system where the references and source information were presented as footnotes at the bottom of each page that has references... MY FINDINGS FROM THE QUESTIONNAIRE PLANNING PROCESS I had a mixed response from my questionnaire however I found out a few points... • 3 out of 4 people spend 2-3 hours on the internet daily • 3 out of 4 people also spend 2-3 hours on social networking sites. Therefore social networking is the most popular element of the internet • Most people thought communicating with friends and family is the best part of using social networking sites. • However, most people think the sites are a security risk • 2 out of 3 people think the sites have improved their social lifestyle. • However there was a mixed response when they stated their opinion on the main statement.   18. - Most of the people I handed questionnaires out to feel that social networking is a good idea and feel it has improved their communications with other people. PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS - The majority of the people I handed questionnaires out to however were of a young age and most people of the age group 13-19 tend to use social networking the most. STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES - I discovered that the amount of time spent online is often debated between parent and child EVALUATION

  19. MY FINDINGS FROM THE CONCLUSION PLANNING PROCESS - I concluded that social networking HAS improved family life in the UK. PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS - I found that because the internet is becoming more relied upon social networking is beginning to play a key role in society. STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES I also believe that the problems created by social networking like cyber-bullying can be eradicated. EVALUATION

  21. STRENGTHS FROM THE PROJECT PLANNING PROCESS - I was implementing the project on a topic I am interested in and also a topic in which I am aiming for as a career. This motivated me to put the extra effort in. PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS - I met all set deadlines. WEAKNESSES - The whole essay is well structured EVALUATION

  22. STRENGTHS FROM THE RESEARCH PLANNING PROCESS • I gathered primary data from the use of a questionnaire. I gained a few strengths from doing this: • - Gathers reliable information and the data I collected is mine so it is specific to what I want to find out and there is no bias in the data I collected. • - Data is relevant to my research and is accurate. • - I received a good response from it (11 responses) PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES EVALUATION - I visited local libraries to gather as many relevant and specific resources as possible.

WEAKNESSES FROM THE PROJECT PLANNING PROCESS - Despite the introduction, the main core of the essay was more focused on a sociology related topic rather than a computer science and internet topic, which I am interested in. PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS - I spent a good amount of the essay talking about the internet and social networking sites, rather than focusing on the actual statement. WEAKNESSES EVALUATION

  25. WEAKNESSES FROM THE RESEARCH PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION - I felt that I didn’t use too many books to gather information and relied too much on e-sources PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS - I could have used more primary research methods e.g. Conducting an interview. WEAKNESSES EVALUATION

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED PLANNING PROCESS - I have learnt a lot more about current issues that affect today’s modern family in Britain. -The internet is starting to become more involved with our day to day living each year. PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS - I have learnt that the amount of time a teenager spends on the internet is often discussed with his/her parent. WEAKNESSES - I have learnt more about the advantages and disadvantages of social networking sites. EVALUATION THE MAIN POINT IS THAT I NOW UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT THE SUBJECT I WANT TO DO AS A DEGREE.

VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION - As this essay is related to computer science and the internet I am sure that my research has given me valuable knowledge for taking a degree in the future PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS - If I get an interview I will understand more about how the subject works and can demonstrate my enhanced knowledge when being interviewed.   30. HAVE I ENJOYED THE EXPERIENCE PLANNING PROCESS - I enjoy doing work independently and when the opportunity came up to do this project I didn’t hesitate to put my name forward. PROJECT EXPLANATION PROJECT FINDINGS - My determination to meet deadlines and structure the project as best as I could showed how eager I was to get a good mark STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES - I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of studying a subject I enjoy and a subject which I am not currently studying at A level and EVALUATION

  31. ANY CHANGES I WOULD MAKE IF I COULD DO IT AGAIN PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION - Focus on doing more primary research I.e. Maybe interview someone who has been a victim of cyber-bullying and ask them how their life has changed. PROJECT FINDINGS STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES - Spend more of my project discussing the statement and analysing the positives and negatives of social networking. Rather than giving definitions of key terms. EVALUATION

  32. ANY ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO OTHERS PLANNING PROCESS PROJECT EXPLANATION - I would tell future candidates to make sure they start it early. PROJECT FINDINGS - Make sure they conduct primary research through the use of questionnaires or surveys to support their statement. STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES EVALUATION
