Impact of Spot Size on Capture Efficiency in Targeted Applications

This study examines the influence of spot size on the capture efficiency in laser applications targeting titanium, investigating both immersed and non-immersed conditions. With variations in spot size from approximately 1.5 mm to 2.3 mm, the capture efficiency dropped by 10% for immersed targets and 14% for non-immersed targets when the spot size increased. However, the use of a quarter-wave transformer showed stability in capture efficiency despite the variations in spot size. This research provides insights relevant to optimizing laser configurations for enhanced efficiency.

  1. Capture Efficiency vs Spot Size Wanming Liu, Wei Gai ANL Aug 15, 2007

  2. Conditions • 100m undulator, K=0.92, lu=1.15cm • Target: Ti, 0.4 rl • Drift to target: from 450m up to 700m(spot size: 1.5mm up to 2.3mm) • Immersed case: 6T-0.5T, 20cm • Non Immersed case: ramp(0-6T) 2cm, 6T-0.5T 20cm • Quarter wave transformer: 1T-0.5T, 2cm DC coil

  3. Capture efficiency Capture efficiency lowered by 10% for immersed target when spot size increased from s ~1.5mm up to ~2.3mm. For non immersed case, the capture efficiency dropped by ~ 14%. For quarter wave transformer, the capture efficiency doesn’t change with spot size within the range of 1.5mm to 2.3mm
