  1. Unit 1 Present, Past, and Future Tenses Tense means time.

  2. The tense of a verb tells when an action takes place. The bear walks to the honey tree. The bear walked to the honey tree. The bear will walk to the honey tree.

  3. Present Tense The present tense of a verb names an action that happens regularly or a habit . It can also express a general truth ( fact ).

  4. The present tense of the verb is the base formof the verb. • When the subject is a singular noun or he, she, or it,you usually add s to the verb. • She visits her friend every Sunday. • You visit your friend every Sunday.

  5. Present tense I visit. We walk. You read. You eat. He,she,or it speaks. They play.

  6. The verb be The present tense of the verb be differs from the base form: am, are, is I am. You are. She is.

  7. Past tense ( time ) The past tense of a verb names an action that already happened. Form past tense of most verbs by adding ed to the base form of the verb.

  8. Future tense ( time ) The future tense of a verb names an action that will take place in the future. • Form the future tense by adding the helping verb will or shall to the base form of the verb • Present continuous is used for a planned future

  9. Simple Future Tense • There are two forms to express future tense • Will + simple form of the verb • Ex. I will see her at five. • Be + going to + simple form of the verb • Reem is going to sign up for ESL next week.

  10. Present Continuous(Future Meaning) • Present continuous is used for a planned future event or action. • Ex. I’m driving to the mall later this afternoon. • The present continuous is not used for the future with verbs such as rain, snow, get sick, or die because these are not planned events and also not used with non-action verbs.

  11. The balloon floats in the breeze. • The balloon floated in the breeze. The balloon will float in the breeze.

  12. Questions • 1- Questions usually begin with a Question word: • Where is the car? • Why are you talking? • How do you go home? • 2-What , Which ,and Whose can be followed by a noun: • What size do you take? • Which book is yours?

  13. 3- Which is generally used when there is a limited choice; • Which is your daughter? The tall one or the short one? • This rule can be broken ; • What / Which newspaper does he read? 4 – How can be followed by an adjective or an adverb; • How tall is your dress. • How quick do you read. • How can also be followed by much or many; • How much is this balloon. • How many students are in the class.

  14. Questions with no question word • The answer to these questions is Yes or No ; • Are you student? • Is he a pilot? • Does she smoke? • Can you swim?
