  2. Tense • The tense of the verb tells the time of action. • Past • Present • Future

  3. Past Tense • A past-tense verb tells about an action that has happened in the past. • Add –ed to regular verbs to form the past tense. • Example: • search - searched

  5. Find the past-tense verb in each sentence. • Brandon searched for the missing cat. • Jackie hurried to the neighbor’s house. • Ashley dashed to the telephone. • They identified their lost cat. • Joshua turned the radio down.

  6. Complete the sentence using the past-tense of the verb. • Everyone loves the little, black cat. • We worry about the cat all the time. • The cat naps in the garage. • Molly, the cat, only listens to me. • The cat eats in the morning and in the evening.

  7. Irregular Past-Tense Verbs • An irregular verb does not end in –ed in the past tense. • Some irregular verbs show past tense by using a helping verb with the main verb. • Many explorers have written about their journeys. • Many common verbs have irregular past-tense forms. • She wears it today. She wore it yesterday. She hasworn it often.

  8. Find the past-tense verb in each sentence. • Lewis wrote observations in his journal. • The weary travelers sang songs at night. • They had seen amazing sights along the trail. • All of them slept soundly. • He heard something strange in the distance.

  9. Complete the sentence using the past-tense of the verb. • We have (know) for days. • He (break) his arm yesterday at the park. • The team (begin) to argue when they started losing. • For the winter chorus concert, we (sing) lots of songs.

  10. Future Tense • A future-tense verb tells about an action that will happen in the future. • Use will with the main verb to form the future tense. • Example: • eat = will eat

  11. Find the future-tense verb in each sentence. • Brandon will search for the missing cat. • Jackie will hurry to the neighbor’s house. • Ashley will dash to the telephone. • They will identify their lost cat. • Joshua will turn the radio down.

  12. Complete the sentence using the future-tense of the verb. • Logan and his friends (play) loud music. • The cat (escape) through the open door. • The family (post) signs all over the neighborhood. • The firefighter (climb) the tree to help the cat. • The hero (rescue) the cat.
