Henry David Thoreau • born in concord, massachusettes • He was introduced to the countryside at a young age, and this first contact with the natural world sparked a lifelong fascination • Although his family lived in relative poverty, subsisting on the income from their small pencil-making busines • Thoreau was able to attend Harvard, where he gained an early reputation as an individualist.

The older pictures are the furthest from the cabin site, beginning with a view of the pond from a nearby hill, looking much as it would have appeared to Thoreau. The newest photos get down to the details of the stones that mark the site today.
