Egyptian Pyramids. Egyptian Kingdoms. Egypt used to be two separate kingdoms, Lower Egypt & Upper Egypt. That all changed when the first Pharaoh, Narmer, united both kingdoms into one Egypt. That’s why the Pharaoh’s crown is red and white, to represent both Upper & Lower Egypt.

  2. Egyptian Kingdoms Egypt used to be two separate kingdoms, Lower Egypt & Upper Egypt. That all changed when the first Pharaoh, Narmer, united both kingdoms into one Egypt. That’s why the Pharaoh’s crown is red and white, to represent both Upper & Lower Egypt. Each family of Pharaohs was known as a dynasty. The order of who became Pharaoh next was called succession. Did you know that Pharaoh means “Great House?”

  3. Pyramids • Built mostly between the 3rd & 6th dynasties. • They were built for the Pharaohs, who were considered part human & part divine. • When a Pharaoh died, he was said to join the gods, especially the sun god Ra. • All tombs were located west of the Nile because that’s where the sun set.

  4. Pyramids • Pyramids were built when the Nile was flooded. • Slaves did not build pyramids. Egyptian laborers built them. • Resources such as food, tools, etc. were taken through taxes to build the pyramid. • People allowed such harsh labor conditions because they believed the Pharaoh had to reach the afterlife to make the gods happy.

  5. Bent Pyramid • The bent pyramid was built by Pharaoh Djoser. • Archeologist think part of the pyramid began to collapse so they had to change the angle halfway through construction. This is why it’s called the “Bent Pyramid.”

  6. Great Pyramid • Pharaoh Khufu built the largest pyramid. • Located on the Giza plateau on the west bank of the Nile. • 755 ft (230 meters) wide & 481 ft. (147 meters) tall. • It took 23 years to build. • The smaller pyramids around it are for his family. • Nearly 2.3 million blocks of stone were used. • The average stone weighted 2.5 tons.

Great Pyramid • While most pyramids were built during the Old Kingdom, some smaller ones were built afterwards. • Most of the pyramids have been robbed by tomb robbers. • Tourism is modern Egypt’s 2nd biggest industry. • The only tomb ever discovered completely intact was King Tut’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

Kindoms • Egypt was at the height of its power during 3 separate kingdoms. • The Old Kingdom built the major Pyramids. • The Middle Kingdom saw the Pharaoh loose some of his power to local governors. • The New Kingdom saw Egypt expand trade, build elaborate temples and become more powerful than ever before. • After the New Kingdom, Egypt was conquered repeatedly by various foreigners.

  9. Valley of the Kings • Built during the New Kingdom (1539 – 1075 B.C). Mostly the 18 – 20th dynasties. • A desert valley where Pharaohs were buried. • Famous Pharaohs such as Tutankhamen, Seti I and Ramses II were buried here. • Located on the west side of the Nile near the city of Thebes (modern Luxor).

Valley of the Kings • The passageways and chambers of the tombs were beautifully decorated guides to the afterlife. • The tombs contain images of Ra depicting his daily cycle of rising & setting each day, as Ra (Re) was creator of the world, this daily cycle symbolized renewal. They believed that the sunset symbolized death and therefore chose the west of the Nile, for the Valley of the tombs.

  11. King Tut • Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s tomb in 1922. It was the only undisturbed tomb ever found! It was full of items for the afterlife. • Over 3,000 treasures were placed in the tomb to help Tutankhamen in his afterlife, and the walls of the burial chamber were painted with scenes of his voyage to the afterworld.
