  2. What is a pyramid? • A pyramid is a massive structure built as a tomb or grave to house and protect the body of the pharaoh in the afterlife. • A pyramid has four triangular sides with each side facing true north, south, east, and west.

  3. Who were pyramids built for? • Pyramids were built for the Egyptian pharaoh and the sons of the pharaoh. When the pharaoh died, his body was placed in a burial chamber inside the pyramid.

  4. Pharaoh’s wives • The queens or wives of the pharaoh had very small pyramids hidden behind or to the side of the main pyramid. • The pharaoh’s favorite wife would have a chamber located inside the pyramid.

  5. Pharaoh’s Workers • Priests, soldiers, scribes, or any other workers who were important to the pharaoh were buried in wood boxes called mastabas outside the pharaoh’s pyramid.

  6. Who built the pyramids? • There were more than 80 pyramids in Ancient Egypt • Farmers were the primary builders of the pyramids • Stones were cut from huge rock quarries and mud from the Nile River was used to build the pyramids

  8. Wooden sleds were used to pull rock from the quarries to the site of the pyramid. 20 to 50 farmers and slaves were needed to drag each stone. Each stone weighed 2.5 tons. The pyramids took about 30 years to build which meant placing on average 210 stones a day on the pyramid. How were the pyramids built?
