UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO Advocacy is: 8th • A full range of strategies and activities designed to enhance support of UC San Diego by internal and external audiences • An increased level of awareness and understanding of the University’s mission, value and contributions • A broader base of UCSD’s support among alumni, elected officials, donors, friends, the campus community, the media and other important constituencies Today, the need to have an effective, engaged advocacy program is critical. In the era of constrained resources, advocacy has taken on greater importance for the campus the UC System In the Number of Biotech Patents Issued The Milkin Institute

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO Goals of Advocacy at UC San Diego 4th • To have an ever-present voice locally, in Sacramento, and in WDC that impacts the decisions made which affect the campus community. • To consistently communicate our strengths and impact the ways that will influence outcomes on issues important to the UCSD community • To develop a diverse teamof stakeholder advocates to convey UC San Diego’s message, “Local Impact • National Influence• Global Reach,” to targeted institutions and in their own communities to help enhance our overall support base for Best Positive Impact on the Nation Washington Monthly Guide

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO Advocacy Issues 9th Proactive • Promoting UCSD’s impact on the region/world - Alumni and friends of UCSD attend UC Day in Sacramento • Partner in EDC’s Global Partnership forum • Chancellor and Staff participate in MLK parade • Ensuring budget and research funding - Trustee John Davies called Senate Minority Leader Dick Ackerman to ensure UC’s budget was approved - Alumnus Mark Diamond meets with legislator’s on funding for Cal IT2 and budget • Coordinating long range development plan - Vice Chancellor Matthews meets with Kumeyaay Tribe members for discussions on University House in the Nation for International Relations Studies Foreign Policy

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO Advocacy Issues 7th Reactive • MTS issue:Need stops for buses, elected officials need to engage MTS board members on UCSD’s behalf • University House: Prof. Jim Posakony appears in video presentation urging support for project at Regents meeting • Support for research budget: Advocates sent emails to elected officials thanking them for passing the budget • North Campus Housing Issue: Transfer student Marwan Azzam wrote a letter to Union-Tribune and The Guardian supporting UCSD’s position on building North Campus Student Housing in R&D Expenditures in the Nation The National Science Foundation
