  1. Our Vision To help deprived and underserved mountain communities in the Philippines live healthy, productive, and peaceful lives with sustainable resource development programs that provide basic services, livelihood development, and education.

  2. Where are we? MTF works with marginalized, post conflict communities in Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, in the Philippines.

  3. Why focus on our Communities? High rates of nutritional deficiency disorders infections and parasitic diseases are common Devastating effects of past local armed conflicts Education remains an elusive dream facilities are minimal books are almost non-existent children attend school undernourished students fortunate enough to reach Grade 5 or 6 often have literacy of Grade 2 or 3 Slash and burn agriculture and illegal mining have many negative environmental and social impacts

MTF Goals Replicate and expand successful programs that beat hunger, protect the body and train the mind Target communities in need adjacent to communities where sustainable development programs have taken hold Seek out partnerships in all sectors: corporate; academic; government; and non-government Respond to Urgent Action Needs

Our Opportunity Over the past 10 years, the Corporate Social Responsibility team (CREDO) of TVI Resources Development (TVIRD) Inc. has worked with the mountain communities in Canatuan, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte in conjunction with their mining operations TVIRD has developed sustainable development programs for these communities, dramatically improving their quality of life MTF has the opportunity to expand and replicate these programs to other communities in need

  6. Our Programs FAITH – Food Always In The Home An agricultural technology, livelihood education program for family members to address food security concerns. It aims to establish a “food garden” for every family. Build- A School/ College Scholarship Program Provide access to education, and education facilities Medical Missions Deliver basic health services to marginalized communities Urgent Action adopt individuals and communities requiring urgent action

  8. Filariasis Program Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantiasis) Program • World’s 2nd leading cause of permanent long-term disability • Endemic in Zamboanga • Caused by parasitic worms and transmitted by mosquitoes • Eradicable disease • Infection can be broken with single dose of medicine

  9. Filariasis Program • Partnered with the Philippine National Filariasis Elimination Program (NFEP) • MTF donated Php782,450.00 • MTF program supported local clinics in a Filariasis elimination program • 216,000 people treated in Zamboanga

  10. Urgent Action School Supply Relief Many impoverished communities in the Philippines, suffered serious flooding after Typhoon Ondoy in Sept/09 Many students lost their homes and most of their belongings, including school supplies

Location Napindan, Taguigand Tanay, Rizal MTF provided an emergency school supply program to encourage students to return to school for elementary students in rural communities Students were given backpackcontaining school supplies and encouragement to value their education and stay in school. Urgent Action School Supply Relief

Build-a-SchoolProgram • In the remote village of Busicong in Zamboanga Del Norte: • Education is inaccessible • There are high illiteracy rates • With no education, Busicong children are tempted to join armed rebel groups • MTF believes that education can provide the kids of Busicong a better alternative

  13. Build-a-SchoolProgram • MTF partnered with: • 1. Petron Foundation • 2. TVIRD • 3. Habitat for Humanity • 4. Department of Education (DepEd) • Partners committed to build a second school in Canatuan to match MTF’s commitment to build a school in Busicong

Build-a-SchoolProgram • September 2010 • Habitat for Humanity conducted site visits to both the school locations in Busicong and Canatuan • Habitat for Humanity completed its assessment report for both locations. • August 2011 • In partnership with the Petron Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, DepEd and TVIRD, the school project in Busicong is expected to commence construction.

Medical Mission • In October 2010, MTF conducted a medical mission in the isolated communities of Balagonan and Panubigan (accessible only by pump boat) • The Mission team: 4 doctors, 2 dentists, Rural Health of Siocon, Philippine Army (18th Infantry Battalion and 44th Infantry Battalion),TVIRD representatives from CREDO

  17. Medical Mission Over 600 residents from Panubigan and Balagonan, who would normally have no access to primary medical care, were treated, given medication, and received dental care.

  18. Medical Mission On May 21, 2011, MTF successfully conducted medical mission in Malambuhangin, the southernmost barangay (village) of the town of Siocon, was selected because of the lack of access to basic medical services and its strategic location.

  19. Medical Mission The team travelled to this isolated community by land for one day. Over 357 residents from the communities surrounding Malambuhangin received free primary medical care, dental services, and medical supplies.

  20. Food Always In The Home • Works with women from families in need to participate in upland agriculture • Creates a food garden in every home • Eliminates traditional slash-and-burn farming

  21. Food Always In The Home • 2008-2010 • The MTF FAITH Project partnered with Siocon Subanon Women Association, Inc. (SSWAI) • To date, there are 400 FAITH gardens in Canatuan and Paduan, 50 of these were supported by MTF • BENEFICARIES • Women and Farmers

Food Always In The Home • FAITH Riverside Project 2011 • Location (Siocon villages) • New Lituban, JP Brilliantes, D’Riconalla and Bulacan • The villages have rich soil to cultivate, yet the majority of residents have limited resources & rudimentary farming knowledge • MTF to provide technology and skills by supplying materials, tools, equipment and an agriculturist

Food Always In The Home • Dec 2010 • The MRU students donated CAD $5,249 (Php 233,318.05) to fund the FAITH program for the villagers of Siocon • Jan 2011 • With funding secured, the FAITH program has been initiated with the MTF’s partner, TVIRD, who will supply logistics, agriculturist, and security • April 2011 • The FAITH Riverside project was officially launched

  24. Food Always In The Home RIVERSIDE COMMUNITES START THEIR PROGRAMS Bulacan and D’Riconalla, have established individual plots, planted seeds, and established a nursery for the two villages
