  2. Poetry Definition: Is a short form of literature • Authors expression of feelings, opinions • Figurative language- metaphors, similes, personification • Usually follows a form/structure

  3. Traditional Literature Definition- stories passed down for generations by oral story telling. Foundation of fantasy. • Folktales • Fables • Myths • Legends • Nursery rhymes • Tall Tales

  4. FANTASY Contains elements that are not realistic Characters: • talking animals, mythical creatures, magical powers, possibly involving mythical beings. Setting: • often set in a medieval times, time travel, magical places. • Plot- journey/quest -it is often good vs. evil

SCIENCE FICTION • stories that often tell about science and technology of the future • involving partially true fictions laws or theories of science • Characters : mutants, Robots, aliens, “mad” scientist • Settings: in the future,in space,on a different world, in a different universe or dimension

  6. REALISTIC FICTION • stories that take place in modern times • characters are involved in events that could happen.

  7. HISTORICAL FICTION • stories centered around the basis of a partially historical situation • a novel set in a historical period

  8. MYSTERY A novel involving: • strangeness • solving a puzzling event or situation • something unknown • solving a crime • centered around a person who investigates wrongdoing • centered around a person or persons employed to obtain secret information

Biography, Autobiography, Memoir • Biography- story of someone's life written by someone else. • Autobiography- story of someone’s life written by themselves. • Memoir- a collection of memories that an individual writes about moments or events, both public or private that took place in the author's life.

  10. Informational • Factual information that is accurate and structured around a central idea to answer a question. • Non-fiction • Provides information about • People • Places • Events • Things • Tells the reader how to do something.
