  14. Your Opinion • Do you like his images? • Why do you think he is famous? • What do you find interesting about his images? • Why are his photos different than others? • Which photo do you remember?

  15. What makes them good? • Interesting composition • New and different views • Capturing a moment in time • Contrast and gray shades • Exploring new ways of looking at everyday sights • Perspectives • Studies in light • Abstract patterns of light and shadow

Why is he famous? • Initiated photography being seen as a form of art • Had gallery shows and published photo magazines • Helped awaken the American public and critics to modem European movements in the visual arts • At the time, his motifs were considered inappropriate for artistic treatment in photography even though Realist and Impressionist painters in Europe had been dealing with similar material for over 40 years • He claimed that in visual art, form, and not specific subject matter, conveys emotional and psychological meaning-new way of looking at art and a predecessor to modernism

Assignment • Take one roll of black and white film (or 24 digital images) • Shoot in the style of Stieglitz • Architecture and urban scenes • Consider light, patterns, movement, perspective • Pick your favorite and most successful image • Enlarge to 8 x 10 • Mount to 11 x 14 • Present this to the class during critique • Be able to identify your thought process while shooting, technical data, and why you think Stieglitz would like to hang this in his gallery • Due next one week from today in class- be ready to present and participate in a group critique

Assessment • Grade will be based on: • Presentation quality (overall final product) • Participation in critique • Demonstrated understanding of master photographer’s method and ideas • Application of camera, darkroom, and or digital techniques to achieve desired results • Proper use of vocabulary and photography terms
