English is the official language of TN • “English is hereby established as the official & legal language of Tennessee. All communications & publications, including ballots, produced by governmental entities in Tennessee shall be in English, & instruction in the public schools & colleges of Tennessee shall be conducted in English unless the nature of the course would require otherwise.”
Funding • Title III ESL • October 1, 2008—GCS has 76 ESL students • Required ratio—1:45 • 2 of our teacher salaries come from state and local $ • GCS has created a supplemental ESL teacher position through Title VI (Rural Education) funds
Accountability • TCAP • AYP subgroup • Gateway/End of Course
What do ESL students need to learn? • Social language • Daily interactions • Academic language • More abstract, precise, higher-order thinking • Necessary to express the content knowledge they alreadyhave&to process new content • Content • Culture
