  3. Characteristics • Quiet, Peaceful, and respect for privacy • Contemplative • Communicate by use of poignant speech • Usually saved for special celebrations • Many an hour spent in/on: • Prayer • Meditation • Scripture • Community Service

Lifestyle, Vows and Rules • Simplicity • Few personal posessions • Do not take the vow of silence • Refrain from ill speech which causes laughter • Vow of Monastic life • God comes before all else • Help every person possible • Afford aid to those for whom it is not common • Ascertain a high level of discipline and humility

  5. The Modern Order • Nearly 4,000 members • 2,100 Monks • 1,800 Nuns • Geographical area of Influence • Covers the globe • 170 Abbeys throughout the world • 12 Abbeys in the United States
