Missionaries and Monks Missionaries: Monks: • Mid 400s A.D. • Sent by the Pope (the leader of the church) to convert people, especially in Britain. • Early 500s A.D. • They lived in monasteries, built in remote locations Job Description: Job Description: • A missionary’s job requires a lot of travel. • Those doing the work of the church are often given the title: Saint • Patrick goes to Ireland (not officially sent by the church) • They do not travel. • Helped to educate about Christianity • Lead a very strict and organized life with rules. • Benedictine Rule was a set of rules set by Benedict and followed by monks in Italy. • Different orders of monks across Europe. Services Provided: • Healthcare to the poor • Charity • Ran schools/ copied books • Collect/Save Greek/Roman writings • Scribes/Advisors to local rulers
