  1. Missionaries The Important Stuff

  2. Teacher Rant • Shit got dangerous with the Musket Wars and Nga Puhi dominated everyone. Missionaries felt the Maori needed to be protected, fair enough. • Shit was also dangerous with no judicial authority in NZ. They tried to fix this by sending Busby as the ‘official British resident’, but he pretty much sucked as NSW didn’t like him and he couldn’t enforce his power. That’s fine.

  3. Teacher Won’t Shut Up • Missionaries are around and about. They see the Maori doing their thing and think HOLY CRAP WHAT SAVAGES THEY MUST BE SAVED. • Therefore they ran around with the message ‘white is right’, which meant converting them to Christianity and civilising them such as encouraging a spirit of trade. That’s fine.

  4. Your point Sir? • So that’s fine, white people are running around taking over the world at this point in history telling everyone not white that their ways are wrong and they’ve come to take over and change/kill them. Nothing here is new that we don’t know in general about this time.

  5. The Key… • Why did Maori allow Missionaries to convert them? What factors contributed to this? We know that initially they thought the Missionaries were crack pots, so what changed their attitude? • So, task….. Read CC pg12-top 17. Complete summary notes on each section that are factors to the Maori accepting Missionaries. Include the change in numbers baptised between 1828 and 1840 to show this change in attitude (pg 12).
