  2. Overview Roman Catholic and Protestant missionaries represented the fourth migrational flow into the region Last from 1834 to 1847 Brought conflict between settlers and Natives as well as advancements for permanent settlements

Objectives 1) to Christianize the Natives 2) to civilize the Natives in accordance with the accepted social and economic ways of the settlers 3) to develop an economic base to support settlers 4) to provide religious services for settlers and fur traders 5) to strengthen the claim of the US to the Oregon Country 6) to spread the Protestant religion to Natives before the Roman Catholic missionaries did 7) to educate both settler and Native children

  4. Lee’s Mission Who? – Jason and Daniel Lee Where? – Willamette River Valley, Oregon When? – 1834 Why? – to establish a mission near the Nez Perce Indians; wives and 52 other settlers brought in around 1840; wanted to be a permanent settlement

  5. American Board Missionaries Who? – William Gray, Henry and Eliza Spalding, and Marcus and Narcissa Whitman Where? – Columbia Plateau, Oregon Country When? – 1836

  6. The Spalding's Selected site with Nez Perce Lapwai Mission: 1836-1847 Chief Joseph taught at Lapwai Successful because of friendliness and adaptability of Nez Perce, Spalding's’ ability to communicate with Nez Perce, ability to teach, and ability to maintain good relations with the other missionaries Developed written alphabet

The Whitmans • Waiilatpu Mission (near Walla Walla, WA) • Mission on Oregon Trail, near Cayuse and Walla Walla Tribes • Marcus was a doctor and treated Natives and settlers • November 29, 1847: Cayuse killed the Whitmans and 13 other residents • Troubles included: • Dr. Whitman’s medical knowledge and aid • Location on Oregon Trail • Attempt to convert Natives • Narcissa’s aloofness

Roman Catholic Missionaries • More successful because of following factors: • Did not encourage immigration into region • Teaching effectiveness enhanced by Catholic ladder • Rituals in church attractive to Natives • Mission sites were widespread • Did not emphasize changing of Native behavior • Travelled to tribes rather than requiring Natives to live at or near mission
