  2. Our Journey of InquiryBeginning – Tuning In • Our Journey began with a ‘Tuning In’ activity. We watched a number of Youtube videos showing weather at it’s Wildest. (Ava) • Tornadoes Throwing A Truck (Ava) • Like you we had many questions after watching videos like this one. (Callum S)

  3. Next Stage – Asking Questions • After watching the videos we generated a lot of questions. These were all things that we wanted to know about Wild Weather, what causes it and it’s effects. (Cal + Sean)

  4. Next Stage – Finding Out! • We thought about some good ways to find answers to our questions. We found out lots of answers to our questions from different places including: (Cal) • Our Parents – we surveyed them about their experiences, Mrs Ferris helped by designing the survey .(Sean) • Websites like ‘Kids WeatherZone’ (Sean) • David Brown a Meterologist who came to visit. (Sean)

  5. What is the Weather? • Weather is the state of the air around us at any given time. It is how windy, cloudy, the temperature, and if it is precipitating or not. (Cass) • People who study weather are called meteorologists. They predict what the weather will be like. (Maddie)

  6. The Water Cycle • The water cycle is when the water rises from the sea and up into the sky and then falls down, often as rain.(Chloe) • There are 3 parts to the water cycle:Evaporation, condensation, precipitation. (Morgan)

  7. Evaporation • Evaporation is where the sun heats water in the oceans and some of it turns into a gas. As a gas it floats into the sky. The same thing happens when a kettle boils and steam comes from the top. (Emma Brown)

  8. Condensation Condensation occurs when clouds rise cooling in the atmosphere and the water vapour becomes tiny droplets of water. Hunter

  9. Precipitation • Rain is made of lots of tiny water droplets. It is caused by condensation. ( Zach D.L) • Snow and hail occurrs when the droplets become ice crystals. (Zach DL) • Sleet is a mixture of snow and rain. (Bella) • Graupel is a very soft hail. (Bella)

  10. Cloud Types • Cirrus clouds are thin whispy clouds, they are composed of ice and get blown into long streamers. They indicate fine weather. (Gemma) • Cumulus clouds are thicker an look like pillows. They can build up and bring showers. (Tom)

  11. Cloud Types • Stratus clouds are thick grey clouds in layers and often signal drizzle. (Olivia) • Cumulonimbus – these are giant towering storm clouds! (Nathan) • See if you can spot different cloud types! (Nathan)

  12. Tornadoes! • Tornadoes also known as twisters form when warm air is drawn in at the base of the cloud and rises upwards. As the air rises it spins. (Aarnav) • The wind in a tornado can travel at 500km per hour and be powerful enough to lift a truck off the ground.( Zac) • You wouldn’t want to get caught in a Twister, luckily for us the big ones happen in America! (Michael)

  13. Barometers • A Barometer is used to measure air pressure. (James) • In general high air pressure indicates fair weather and low air pressure indicates a high chance of rain. (Fabian) • We made Barometers to measure air pressure. Here is a picture of our Barometers. (Callum)

  15. What Do Scientists Do? • The scientific method is used for experiments and observations as well as answering questions. This is the scientific method. (Boyd) • Ask a question (A) • Do research (B) • Think of a hypothesis (A) • Test an experiment (B) • Draw conclusion (A) • Report results =happy (B)

  18. So What? • We learned that our Earth really is an amazing place and that our weather is so important. We depend on the rain and the sunshine in balance to help provide all the food that we eat! • It’s not just about supermarkets you know! (Brooke)
