  1. Distance Learning; Our Strategy Markfield Institute of Higher education

  2. Our Approach Face to Face (F2F) teaching, Blended Learning (BL) and Enquiry Based Learning (EAL) Concentrate on BL to illustrate an approach to addressing problems of teaching large student groups BL design based on the principles of deep learning.

  3. Overview Blended learning design that seeks to: demonstrate a potential distance learning model illustrate the different elements required outline potential delivery and support issues

  4. Example of a blended learning design • This design promotes deep learning because it defines a dialogue between the ‘lecturer’ and ‘student(s)’ on two levels: • the discursive level – where the focus is on theory, concepts and description building • The experiential level – where the focus is on practice, activity and reflection on action

  5. Example of a blended learning design Core elements of design Workbook –questions designed to encourage reflection and debate Lecture recording (Moodle)–provide access to theory, ideas and concepts

  6. Example of a blended learning design Core elements of design Workbook –questions designed to encourage reflection and debate Lecture recording (Moodle)–provide access to theory, ideas and concepts Small working groups –encourage dialogue and debate, share ideas and understanding with peers Submit exercises for tutor feedback –offer their own ideas, space to ask questions, use feedback to improve understanding and performance Apply learning to ‘real life’ scenarios –opportunity to take part in goal – action – feedback cycle

  7. Potential Delivery and Support Issues Tutors Time commitment to initially design and develop On going input to student development Assessment revision Accessibility Issues Flexibility Students Issues related to group working Moving out of ‘comfort zone’ Challenging Accessibility issues Permanent learning resource and record of learning Fun

  8. Introduction to Moodle Moodle is a e-learning software platform that we use in MIHE. I will demonstrate various application of the software and how students can get access to it.

  9. Agenda • What is Moodle? • Why would I want to use Moodle? • How do I get access to Moodle? • Where do I get resources? • Few Videos (you tube) • Time to explore Moodle …

  10. What is Moodle? • Modular • Object Oriented • Dynamic Learning Environment
