NORDAC Nordic Armaments Co-operation Nordic Co-operation in Mortars Background and Scope • Task given 1996 to a Joint Nordic working group: ’Study and Develop an armoured mortar system well suited for Nordic conditions.’ • Joint Nordic 4-Nation Project Agreement signed October 1999 • The agreement outlines co-operation with regards to such issues as commercial, technical, tactical info • Phase 1 of the Project Agreement defines a co-operation until end 2003. Phase 2 (under preparation) shall cover all activities related to Full Development until 2007 Government Co-operation Industrial Co-operation • Swedish FMV and Finnish DFMC are active partners • Danish HMAK and Norwegian FLO/Land are observers • Canada have applied for observer status • Finnish Patria Hägglunds OY is the prime contractor. • Patria Weapon Systems and Alvis Hägglunds are sub contractors and do all principal work (also owners of PH)

User Requirements Readiness • Indirect firing within 15/30 seconds after receiving target data when stationary/on the move. • Out of action in less than 10 seconds. • Direct firing within 15 seconds after target detection. • Range: threshold 7, objective 10 km • Rapid firing at multiple targets enabled by turret design.
User Requirements Firepower • 4 rds in less than 5 sec • 8 rds in less than 20 sec • 12 rds per minute for 3 min • 72 rds on board - HE, plus DPICM and/or smart guided AT. • 6 rds MRSI. • Compatible with conventional 120 mm mortar ammunition and STRIX.
User Requirements C4ISR • The SSG120 shall have both INS and GPS for navigation and laying • Digital/graphical integration of INS/GPS, BMS and FCC.

SSG120 Navy Application Turret on Combat Boat 90 • Joint Army/Navy programme to be in full operation from SD&D (PDF) • Primary focus of tests is put on: • Firing precision and accuracy • Fire on the move • Tests also focused at subsystem compatibility; FCC, INS+GPS, MMI • SSG120 Navy will take full advantage from experience for the Army version • Worlds first truly remotely controlled mortar turret • Objective also to pave the way for firing on the move with SSG120 Army version
Areas of Particular Concern • Today's ammunition • Only qualified for transport in original boxes • Not optimised for breech loading and direct fire • Needs a “man in the loop” • Fuzes • No inductive setter developed and tested • No inductive setting fuze developed for direct firing • Stub case • Logistic tail • System responsibility
Requirements Summary • Winter and summer trials successfully conducted by Swedish Army Combat School • The SSG120 is fully autonomous and automated • The SSG120 can fire on the move at moving targets • The SSG120 has a significant development potential SSG120 meets TRL7 todayTRL: Technology Readiness Level in accordance with US definition
Programme Summary • SSG120 will be the Indirect & Direct Firepower for National & International Manoeuvre Battalions and Amphibious Task Units • SSG120 aims at Net-centric integration • SSG120 supports both Precision Engagement and Area Engagement • SSG120 is Responsive and Accurate • SSG120 is a fully funded programme throughout series production SSG120 has proven exceptional performance and is showing great potential for future development
