12. Waxing Crescent 1. The sunlit portion is increasing, but less than half. 2. The term “waxing” means growing larger in size.

15. First Quarter • happens when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun. So we are seeing exactly half of the moon illuminated and half in shadow.

18. Waxing Gibbous • the sunlit portion is still increasing, but now it is more than half.

21. Full Moon • The moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, so the entire sunlit part of the Moon is facing us. The shadowed portion is entirely hidden from view.

24. Waning Gibbous • the sunlit portion is decreasing, but it is still more than half. 1. The term “waning” means it appears to get smaller in size.

30. Waning Crescent • The sunlit portion is still decreasing, but it is less than half.
