  6. Warm Up - Sentences The movie was about a thoughtful Navy officer whose love will linger longer than the lollipop in his mouth. The author wrote a vain book about the victory of his colorful fish over the threat of silly clothing. My brother’s other mother thought it was soothing to clean the valuable filth off the crazy valve.

  7. Quizzes • Quizzes: Your handwriting is good! • I need more substance from many of you. • “Don’t be a loser” is not incorrect, but it also does not convey the meaning of the word within the sentence. • “Stop playing video games all the time until you get a job. Don’t be a loser!” • Same problem with “Do me a solid.” • “I am running late. Could you do me a solid?”

  8. Quizzes • Almost everyone who used the word “impressed” expressed it as “deeply impressed” or “impressed me deeply.” • I assume you learned this word before, and were taught to do this. • Not necessary! It sounds very dramatic. If you want to use an adverb, say “very impressed.”

  10. EXAMPLE SENTENCES I wanted extra credit so I rowed and sailed like an owl to downtown Athens to answer something rotten. I ate a pound of raw cow and I’m sorry the red rabbit can’t account for world silk allowance. I wrote a sentence down with many vowels and downloaded the seventh word at swing.com.

DON’T EMBARRASS YOURSELF • High time: used to describe urgency • It is high time we do our homework • I have only ever heard my dad say this! • Instead say “its about time” or simply “its time.” • It’s about time we do our homework. • It’s time for us to go to class. • We gotta go home now. (“Gotta” is short for “got to.”) • We need to go to the store to pick up some groceries. • I gotta run. It’s time for my meeting with the English Club.

  14. Do you agree with me? • When you express an opinion, don’t ask people if they agree with you. It comes off as kind of rude. • It is as if you are pressuring them to respond in a particular way. • If you have an opinion or a comment, just say it! • Sean, I think your class is really great! (I agree with this.) • I think it’s better to take the number 5 bus to Liuyan than the blue bus.

I want to ask you… • Do not begin questions with “I want to ask you…” • This makes sense when you are first starting to learn English, but by now, you can drop it! • I want to ask you, what do you think of my homework assignments? • Just ask! “Mr. Sean, what do you think of my homework assignments?”

  16. My [blank] is so so. • We know what this means, but no one really says it. • My English is so so. • Are you good at basketball? I’m so so. • We usually say “alright” or “ok,” sometimes with a hand gesture. • My English is alright. I still have a lot of studying to do. And I’m ok at basketball.

  17. That sounds… sexual • I played with my boyfriend • I didn’t do my homework. I am a naughty girl! • You missed class today? You are a bad boy! • These terms apply to two things: kids, and in sexual situations. • Shining… please come demonstrate this in the most gentle way possible.

You are a bad boy! • Change to something like: • I spent time with my boyfriend. I hung out with my boyfriend. • I didn’t do my homework. I’m not a perfect student. I kind of blew it this time. • You missed class today? Well, we have class every week. Just don’t miss it too often.

  19. MOST IMPORTANT • “In two weeks…” “Two weeks later….” • Many of you say “[Blank time] later…” when referring to the future. This is wrong! • “Two weeks later, I will go to Wuhan.” • Correct: “In two weeks, I will go to Wuhan.” • [One month from now…] “I had a class one month ago with Mr. Sean, and two weeks later I went to Wuhan.”

  20. MOST IMPORTANT - Examples • October 1: Today, I have a class with Mr. Sean. In one week, I will have a job interview. • October 7: Today, I have a job interview. One week ago, I had class with Mr. Sean. In two weeks, I have a math test. • October 21: Today I have a math test. Three weeks ago, I had class with Mr. Sean. One week later, I had a job interview.

  21. HOMEWORK • I have gone back to the United States, and you want to write me a personal letter through the mail. • Start “Dear Sean…” and end “Sincerely, [Your name] • I will post an example on the website.

  22. Homework • Tell me about: • What is going on with you. • What you have done since I went back to the States. • What your plans are for the future. • Use your imagination! Make this stuff up, based on what think you will have done, will be doing, and will do in the future • Due next Thursday

  23. Homework • Correctly use what you were taught to use incorrectly. • High time • Do you agree with me? • I want to say • So so • Naughty, bad boy, play with… (Use one of these.) • Two weeks later, In two weeks (Use both of these. It does not matter what duration of time you use. Two weeks, 1 year, 6 months, 4 hours, 10 minutes.)
