  1. IST-2000-28027 POETIC Reconfigurable POEtic Tissue Andy Tyrrell University of York, UK Technical University of Catalunya, E University of Glasgow, UK University of Lausanne, CH Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, CH Project start and duration: September 1, 2001, 36 months.

  2. Objective of the project The goal of the POEtic project is the development of a flexible computational substrate inspired by the evolutionary, developmental and learning phases in biological systems.

  3. 2,0 2,1 2,2 1,0 1,1 1,2 0,0 0,1 0,2 POEtic Bio-inspiration Phylogeny (P) - Evolution Evolutionary Computation Ontogeny (O) - Development Embryonics Epigenesis (E) - Learning Spiking NN, Immunotronics

  4. Expected achievement The POEtic tissue will be a cellular surface composed of a variable number of elements, or cells. Each cell of the tissue will have the same basic structure, but will be able to acquire different functionalities, as "totipotent cells" in living organisms. Within such structure, groups of cells will be able to co-operate to realise a given task, giving rise to substructures not unlike organs in living beings.

  5. Impact

  6. Action that FET might launch • Complex Systems • Bio-inspired Systems • Beyond living artefacts
