  2. Brainstorming Process • Original ideas: • Car on a conveyor belt? • Football player receiving a flying ball? • Godzilla attacking a city?

  3. Conveyor Belt Car • Liked this idea but faced several difficulties: • SolidWorks does not allow for flexible objects. • Conveyer belt required changing plane • Possible to do but very difficult. Instructor did not recommend it.

  4. Decision • Godzilla

  5. The Godzilla AMT • Idea: • Godzilla’s rampage • Functions: • Godzilla’s arms move up and down to attacking the building. • Flames surround the building going up and down. • Soldier runs a circle terrified.

  6. Transition into SolidWorks • Initially believed SolidWorks would be difficult to use. • It wasn’t. • Each group member was assigned to create different parts of the AMT model (Eg. The cams, the rods, the figures and the box, etc.) • Divided the work between 2 groups. • 1 group worked on the mechanical box. • 1 group worked the figures.

  11. Transition to Physical Model • Assumed that with the SolidWorks model as a guide, the physical would be easy to build. • It was not. • Problems encountered: • Material consideration. • Restrictions on dimensions. • Gravity. • Timing of the movements. • Time to make.

  12. Components • Mechanical box – Cardboard • Figures – Cardboard • Soldiers – Miniature toy figurines. • Rod – Wooden craft sticks • Crank – Window blind revolver • Cams – Several wooden discs joined together.

  13. Using Spatial Thinking • Size constraints. • Less room to run all of the components. • Alignment of components • Solution? • A simpler design.

  14. Summary • We now have a greater understanding of Spatial Thinking. • Applied previously learned skill of how to convey ideas graphically- in both 2D and 3D. • Learned the usefulness of SolidWorks in the professional field. • Developed strong teamwork ethic. • Project exercised a large variety of skills.

  15. Course Improvements? • Review of introduction concepts– sketching, etc.- at end of class. • More in depth tutorials on how to use SolidWorks in class and related concepts (types of mates). • More group projects, incorporating the use of SolidWorks. • Better course description and what concepts to be learned are.
