  1. First Trimester(0-12 weeks)

  2. 1st Month - Baby 1st week – menstrual period 2nd week – getting ready to release egg 3rd week – ovulation & fertilization • Zygote (fertilized egg) • Divided several times over to become a tiny ball of microscopic cells • Travels from fallopian tube to uterus • Implants in uterus • Amniotic sac forms around • Cushions the developing baby

  3. 1st Month, continued 4th week • Zygote splits in ½ • Baby (embryo) • Placenta (baby’s lifeline connected by umbilical cord) • Transfers nutrients from mom to baby and transfers waste from baby End Results: The embryo is about ¼ of an inch long. The heart has begun beating. The head, mouth, liver, and intestines have begun to take shape.

  4. 1st Month - Mother • You don’t look pregnant……but you’re feeling it! • Flood of pregnancy hormones • Progesterone & estrogen • Bloating, cramping, mood swings • Breasts tender and becoming bigger • Possible lower-abdominal achiness • ¼ (side ovulating from) • Implantation bleeding • Common and harmless spotting

  5. 2nd Month - Baby Week 5 – resembles a teeny tadpole (w/tail), neural tube (brain and spinal cord) developing Week 6 – jaw, chin, eyes, ears, and nose Week 7 – brain cells (100/min), tongue, arm and leg buds sprout, kidneys starting Week 8 – spontaneous movements, now called FETUS End Results - The embryo is about an inch long. The placenta is already nourishing the baby through the umbilical cord. Most vital organs are developed.

  6. 2nd Month - Mother • Food cravings and aversions (hormones) • Increased sense of smell • Increased blood flow to pelvic area and uterus to push down on bladder • Constipation • Might have grown a full cup size • Dizziness

  7. 3rd Month - Baby Week 9 – tiny muscles beginning to form Week 10 – elbows, buds of baby teeth forming under gums, stomach and kidneys starting to work, testes making testosterone Week 11 – growing hair follicles, fingernails, and ovaries, hands and feet, ears almost done, nipples, no more webbed fingers and toes Week 12 – producing white blood cells, and producing hormones End Results: The fetus is about2 ½ to 3 inches long. Baby has begun swallowing and kicking. All organs and muscles have formed and are beginning to function. The arms, legs, hand, and fingers are fully developed.

  8. 3rd Month – Mother • FATIGUE • Flatulence • Visible veins • over belly and breasts • (body’s blood supply will increase 20-40%) • Towards end morning sickness should decrease and become more hungry • Sex drive (individual)

  9. Conclusion: 1st Trimester • All major structural organs formed • Most vulnerable to damage • At end: weighs 1 ounce and 3” long
