  1. Second Trimester(13-27 weeks)

  2. 4th Month - Baby 13th week – tiny bones are forming, intestines moving from umbilical cord to abdomen, vocal cords starting 14th week – more fluid in movements, palate develops, has a downy coat of hair (lanugo) 15th week – ears to the side, eyes to the front, wiggle fingers and toes, start to make breathing movements

  3. 4th Month, continued 16th week • Can hear your voice, starting to make facial expressions, perceives light (eyelids still closed) End Results: Hair begins to grow, head more erect, quickening may start to happen

  4. 4th Month - Mother • You may start to notice leukorrhea • thin, mild-smelling, milky vaginal discharge • Protects birth canal from infection • Less morning sickness, breasts not as tender, less frequent urination • Gums prone to bleeding, stuffy nose, nosebleeds • Weekly weight gain of about 1 lb • Decreasing fatigue • Body has adjusted to the pregnancy

  5. 5th Month - Baby Week 17 – heart now regulated by her brain (2X fast as yours), practicing sucking and swallowing Week 18 – twisting, rolling, kicking, punching, yawning, hiccupping, toe and fingerprints Week 19 – skin covered in vernix (greasy, white protecting film from amniotic fluid) Week 20 – girl (uterus formed and ovaries holding eggs), boy (testicles have begun descent from abdomen) End Results – can find out gender, a lot of movement, if born now might die of respiratory problems

  6. 5th Month - Mother • Starting to show • Greater sensitivity to allergens • Large appetite • Snoring • Backaches • Stretch marks • Fetal movement • Varicose veins (legs) • Leg cramps • Pregnancy “glow” – skin, hair, and nail changes • Protruding navel

  7. 6th Month - Baby Week 21 – developing taste buds Week 22 – eyebrow, eyelashes Week 23 – saggy skin will start to fit frame as fat deposits fill out, less transparent Week 24 – hair (white), everything growing, hearing getting sharper, *50% survival rate End Results: eight and a half inches long and weighs one and a half pounds (double weight), eyes are open

  8. 6th Month – Mother • Feet may grown a shoe size • Dark line down middle • Itchy belly • Forgetfulness “pregnancy brain” • Tingling hands (carpal tunnel) • Vision changes (decrease tear production)

  9. 7th Month - Baby Week 25 – air sacs will develop in lungs, capillaries forming and filling with blood, nostrils are starting to open Week 26 – eyes start to open, brain more sophisticated, *90% survive Week 27 – may recognize Your voice End Results: Most likely live if born covered with vernix

  10. 7th Month – Mother • Hemorrhoids • Restless legs syndrome • Insomnia • Clumsiness • Puffy (edema – mild swelling)

  11. Conclusion: 2nd Trimester • Rapid growth • Fifteen inches long • Just over two pounds • Body proportion changes • from ½ head to ¼ head
