Martin Luther • What is Luther’s Story? • What is the story of Indulgences and Johan Tetzel? • How does Luther “Protest”, what is the timeline of events? • What are the central principles of Lutheran teaching? • 3 Only’s: Faith, Grace, Scripture • How does Lutheranism survive and take hold in Germany? What are 3 or four noteworthy events, institutions, people, or ideas that get the HRE to the principle of cuis region, eius religio?

  4. The Reformation Spreads • How did the Reformation spread? Give a brief sketch for each: • Scandinavia • France • Switzerland • Scotland • England • How did the Catholic Church respond to the ultimate Heresy?

Reformation APPARTS to DRA • Erasmus, Luther, Luther, 12 Articles, Calvin, Trent: Discuss the main ideas and significance • How do the ideas of one relate to the others • What are the points of view represented • Which are in agreement & which in conflict • Write a statement that puts all 6 documents into a shared historical context (see your Chapter 3 theme card!) • Add to that statement a sentence or two that introduces the documents • Add to that a final sentence that suggests how these documents as a group say something about this period (see #2 above!) • Write a Paragraph or two that captures the discussion in #1: what are the main ideas in each document, POV, agreements, disagreements….. • Write a final paragraph that summarizes how these documents as a group illuminate significant aspects of the Reformation!

Requirements • Bold title in notebook • Map cut in half centered(Merriman, p.109/WC’s, p.503/482) • Timeline 1517-1565(Council of Trent) • 15 or 20 important events/people/developements • Flippy for each Protestant reformation • Luther • Zwingly • Anabaptists • Calvin • Henry VIII • Elizabethan Compromise • Counter Reformation/Council of Trent

Flippy Contents Each Flip Has: • A visual that represents the core of the protest or reform • A Title on top, date on bottom • On inside: a definition, who, what, where, when, why • On the inside cover: exert your documents with a quote that most clearly expresses the protest or reform (Luther, Calvin, Council Trent) • A bold line that connects the flip note to the map and places it in a geographic context

Religious War: Flippy Notes Your map and timeline will also represent the major religious wars of the 16th & 17th Centuries • Use Western Civilizations as a reference(Ch.15 in XIV Ed./13 in XV Ed.) • The major issues, personalities,course, and resolution of each war must be explained and presented in writing, on timeline, and on map The following conflicts must be addressed: • German Wars of Relegion to 1555 • The French Wars of Relegion [include Edict of Nates] • The Revolt of the Netherlands • England and the Defeat of the Spanish Armada • The Thirty Years War
