  3. The Beginning Right now I can’t decide between college and world domination • Born in Corsica • Small island in the Mediterranean • Attended Military School in his youth • Joined the French Army as an artillery officer • Rises quickly due to the French Revolution…eventually becomes a war hero

  4. The Rise to Power I chose world domination • The government is unpopular • Napoleon is in charge of the entire military • Napoleon leads a Coup d’ etat • The military takeover makes Napoleon the most powerful person in France

  5. Napoleon the Ruler • A Plebiscite votes on a new constitution • Napoleon is granted total power • Napoleon • Stabilizes the economy • Bring equal taxation • Creates a National Bank • Builds Lycees • Fires corrupt government officials • Signs a Concordat with Pope Pius VII • Creates the Napoleonic Code Nothing says power like a golden leafy thing

How the Empire was Built This is exactly how I picture this moment in my memory • Napoleon introduced new ideas of freedom & equality • Napoleon either took over other nations or placed his family in leadership roles which allowed him to control the country anyway • He is very smart and powerful

  8. The French Empire • Napoleon both scares and defeats Austria, Prussia, Germany and Spain • Napoleon has built the greatest European Empire since Rome • The only true threat left is Britain

  9. The Battle of Trafalgar • Napoleon attempted to defeat the British in a naval battle off the coast of Spain • He is defeated by Horatio Nelson • This battle halts Napoleon’s plans for European domination

  10. Napoleon’s Three Big Mistakes Sadly, this was the actual moment • The Continental System • Britain’s blockade was better • The Peninsular War • He upset Spain to get to Portugal…big mistake • The Russian Invasion • Invaded his ally during the winter…Scorched Earth Policy…not good

The First Ending Some of you will die…not me though • Napoleon is weak due to his big mistakes • A European Coalition joins up and defeats him in April of 1814 • Britain, Russia, Prussia, Sweden & Austria • Napoleon is banished to the island of Elba in the Mediterranean • Louis XVIII is the new king of France

  12. The Congress of Vienna • All European nations came together in Austria for several months to discuss the situation • The most powerful nations conducted back door deals to maintain power • The “Old Regime” is resisting change Hey there…how you doin’? Klemens Von Metternich

  13. The Verdict • France’s surrounding nations were made stronger • Netherlands, German Confederation, Switzerland • Former rulers were returned to power • Concert of Europe ensured that nations would help each other out in a time of revolution

  14. The 100 Days • Napoleon escapes Elba after 9 months and returns to France • On June 20, 1815, Napoleon surrendered at Waterloo • This time he was banished to St. Helena in the South Atlantic • He died in 1821 of a stomach ailment (cancer)

  15. Lasting Effects • The seeds of revolution have been planted in both Europe and America • The “Old Regime” is headed for trouble • The world will begin to look more like it does to day in the coming century
