Principles of Art and Design: Contrast, Balance, Rhythm, and Emphasis in Drawing
This assignment focuses on key principles of art and design through drawing. Students will create four half-page drawings featuring backgrounds: two using pencil and shading, and two using color. Emphasis will be placed on understanding contrast, balance (including symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial), as well as movement, rhythm, and patterns. Key concepts like focal points, and the use of light and dark to create visual interest will be explored. This exercise promotes a deeper comprehension of artistic elements and their interplay within a composition.

Drawing 2 • Watch video on Principles and Take notes. • Assignment: • 4 half page drawings with background. • 2 with pencil and shading. • 2 with color. • Contrast and balance • Movement • Rhythm and pattern • Emphasis
BALANCE • Symmetrical • Asymmetrical • Radial
CONTRAST • Contrast in art and design occurs when two related elements are different. The greater the difference the greater the contrast. • The most common ways of creating contrast are by creating differences in: • size • value• color• type• texture • shape• alignment• direction• movement
Notice the contrast of the light background (wall) with dark foreground (table cloth) and the contrast of the dark shadows on the tea pot and cup against the wall and with the lights of the same objects against a dark window.
On the right a contrast exists between the lights and darks. Also notice the contrast of the roundness of the objects in the foreground against the flatness of the background.
EMPHASIS • Emphasis is the stressing of a particular area of focus. • Center of Interest or Focal Point. • Contrast with Primary Element.
MOVEMENT & RHYTHM • The purpose of movement is to create unity in the artwork with eye travel. • Repetition and Rhythm • Action
