  1. Hazmat Game Design Document Will Ryan

  2. Outline • Overview of what I was working on • What is done • What needs more work • Getting materials to virtual heroes (from my end)

  3. Overview • Complement the other design components • Scenario: specific chemical, specific accident, specific map • Design Document: general discussions of interaction between players, chemicals, and environment • Sketch out major components of environment

  4. Grand Scheme of Design General Approach Map Application by Virtual Heroes Scenario

  5. What is done?

  6. Components of the Game • Environment • Layout • Physics • Interaction • Lighting • Sound • Objects • Chemicals • Equipment • Containers • Cargo & Freight • Other • Actors • Player Characters • NPCs • Gameplay

  7. Components of the Game • Environment • Layout • Physics • Interaction • Lighting • Sound • Objects • Chemicals • Equipment • Containers • Cargo & Freight • Other • Actors • Player Characters • NPCs • Gameplay

  8. Environment • Main structure of game • Major Section: Layout • Given certain constraints provides an example map • first approximation of actual map • Further iterations needed to draw the map closer to what Virtual Heroes will get

  9. Environment • Other sub-sections • Physics • Movements of players, vehicles, and chemicals. • Methods of Interaction • How and with what do players interact with things in the environment • Lighting & Sounds • Types and locations of lighting & sounds in the environment

  10. Objects • Things put in the game • Major Section: Chemicals • Non-exhaustive list of chemicals and major properties • Flash point • Liquid Viscosity, Gas Density • Physical Properties • Hazardous Properties

  11. Objects • Other sub-sections • Equipment • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hazard detectors • Containers & Cargo and Freight • Containers used for storing and transporting hazardous materials, the leaks they are susceptible to, and how they can be fixed • Other • Several other miscellaneous objects that can be found in environment

  12. Actors • Avatars who can affect change in the environment • Major Section: Player Character • Interface that player sees • Ways of interacting with environment (using crosshairs) • Communication with other players and people in the space

  13. Objects • Other sub-section • NPCs • Will describe their roles in the environment • Will describe how players interact with them

  14. Gameplay • Things to do in the environment • Describes the basic breakdown of a scenario • Identifying the chemical • Identifying hazards in the environment • Containing the chemical • Organize the clean-up zones • Decontamination • Post-cleanup

  15. What needs to be done?

  16. Remaining Design Issues • From the perspective of the general overview: • Sections mentioned before (Map layout, equipment, NPCs, and gameplay) • Scenario editor • Process of replay (After Action Review) • Roles other than player such as classmate spectator, instructor, and external observer

  17. What to send to Virtual Heroes?

  18. Deliverables to VH • Send design document or not • If sent, more information means we will be more on the same page, but may be too much info • Otherwise they get more focused, more concise information, but may miss broader picture • If design document is sent • Need to at the least update map layout and gameplay and complete the equipment section
