  1. HazMat Safety Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company Safety Department

  2. HazMat and the Workplace • About 30 million workers are exposed to hazardous materials in the workplace. • Training and safety protocols to keep our workers safe when handling hazardous materials • Hazardous materials may be very hazardous (i.e. HCl, anhydrous ammonia)

  3. Types of Hazards • Categories of Hazards • Fire • Hazards ability to combust • Can be in any form • Explosion • Even more volatile than fire hazard chemicals • Reactivity • When combined with things like water and air, some chemicals react in a manner that is not safe

  4. Types of Hazards • Types of Ingestion • Inhalation • Some chemicals pose inhalation issues for employees • Can cause acute or chronic lung problems • Absorption • Some chemicals cause rashes or burns on the skin while others may be absorbed when touched

  5. Helpful Tools • How to determine the hazard • Chemical container’s label • Required to have certain information • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) • Has all information concerning specific chemicals

  6. Label • Information on label • Safe storage • Handling • Basic safety procedures • Precautions • First aid

  7. Label • Information on Label • Color and number system to alert user of chemical hazards • Blue means health hazard • Red means flammability hazard • Yellow means reactivity hazard • Number 0-4 rates degree of hazard • W with a line means do not use water to extinguish and OX signifies and oxidizer

  8. Health Hazards • Common health hazards associated with Hazardous Materials • Lung damage • Burns • Rashes • Difficulty breathing

  9. MSDS • Gives all details concerning a chemical • Provide first aid information • Gives more information than should be generally needed • Should be kept in a easily accessible location for all employees to access when necessary

  10. Chemical Rules • Never use a chemical in an unlabeled container • Keep the work area clean and organized • Keep food and drinks out of the work area • Wash thoroughly after handling chemicals • Ensure it is known what to do in the case of an emergency

  11. Quiz • What are the three general categories of hazards a chemical might pose? Fire Explosion Reactivity

  12. Quiz • What is meant by a reactivity hazard? The chemical may catch fire, explode or otherwise react when exposed to water or air.

  13. Quiz • What are the two tools for determining a chemical’s hazard? Chemical label, MSDS

  14. Quiz • What are three pieces of information found on a chemical label? Safe storage and handling First aide General safety precautions

  15. Quiz • What does the red color on a label indicate? Fire hazard

  16. Quiz • Explain the number system on the labels. Hazards are rated 0-4 according to the degree of the hazard.

  17. Quiz • What are common health hazards related to chemicals? Lung damage, burns, rashes

  18. Quiz • Name two general safety rules you could apply to almost every chemical during use. Never use an unlabeled chemical Wash thoroughly after use Keep food and drink in a different area Keep the area clean and free of debris
