Movement • The komodo dragon moves by moving its powerful legs • A komodo dragon can run up to 18 kph in short bursts • A komodo dragon can stand for a couple of second when in a fight. • The komodo dragon is also a fair swimmer • Even though the komodo dragon is a big unit it is quick and agile. They can climb trees and like most lizards, komodo dragons are good swimmers.

  3. Sensitivity • A komodo dragon has a keen sense of smell which allows them to smell scents up to 8.5 kilometers away • They have about 60 teeth which get replaced frequently and are positioned to cut out chunks out of its prey. • The komodo dragon can see up to 300 metres away

  4. Growth • A komodo dragon’s life expectancy is between 20 and 40 years • A komodo dragon being the largest lizard in the world can grow to over 3 metres long • They can weigh a massive 91 kg • There are about 3000 to 5000 komodo dragons left on the planet

Reproduction • Before a mating season a komodo dragon would perform rituals, so when mating season starts the female komodo is more receptive to the male • Some of the male komodo’s rituals would include tongue-touching, snout nudging, chin rubbing, neck biting, and scratching. • The first part of life of a new born komodo dragon is spent fending for themselves.

Nutrition • A komodo dragon can eat • Goats • Wild pigs • Rats • Deer • A komodo dragon can eat anything from a small rodent to a water buffalo. • A komodo dragon can eat about 43.5 kg in the space of a few minutes. • If a animal manages to get away from a komodo dragon, the animal would die in a few days because the komodo dragons bite is infectious.
