  1. A numeracy rich environment: routines and regular activities Surrey Plus Maths Hub Hersham and Guildford

  2. Register time Meadowcroft Infants Julie Mason & Karen Henderson

  3. Self-registrationTen frames and individual photos. A great opportunity for mathematical language and discussion in a practical situation. One child arrived and picked up his photo. He looked at the ten frame that others had begun to fill. ”6 are on already and me, 1 more is 7.” Another child next to him had a look: “3 to get to10,” he commented, counting the 3 blank squares. “7 add 3 is 10.” Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

  4. Numbered self - registration Wood Street Suzy Matten

  5. Splat square- at register timeA child is chosen to find and click on the number of the children that are present. They need to work out the answer if anyone is absent. The whole class counts from number one to that number whilst the teacher splats each number square. (They love the sound!) The teacher then asks a number of questions, choosing a child to splat the answer. Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

  6. Register bunny ears We pick a bunny number (we made cards like those above). Each child has to use Bunny Ears to make that number when they answer the register. Bisley C of E Primary Anna Pilkington

  7. Maths meetings and displays • Number of the week • Answer the register by: • clapping/jumping that many • showing with your fingers Nonsuch Hannah Dillon

  8. Threeness of 3Warren Mead Infants Susan Bovill Our number of the week is 3, come on a count with me, throw your fingers, clap up high, write the number in the sky. I can hear a number (oh yeah) when I listen very hard (oh yeah) I can hear a number (oh yeah) I better close my eyes for a big surprise…..

  9. Maths challenge of the week Warren Mead Infants Susan Bovill

  11. Which fruit did you choose? Sunflower Nursery StainesPrep Caroline Mitchell

  12. Fruit/Snack AreaOranges and bananas are marked to reinforce number recognition as well as providing opportunities for child initiated ordering/missing numbers etc. Pewley Down Sheena Preston

  13. Lunch! St Lawrence Anne Tucker

  14. Tidy up time We made a short list of the number of coloured eggs and nests used on the table top. The VIPs of the day had the task of checking at the end of the morning. Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

  15. Tidy –up labels indoors and out Wood Street Katherine Potter

  16. Classroom organisation supports children in understanding cardinality: match the five frame image on the basket to the numeral on the shelf The Orchard School Paige Tynegate

  17. Counting: 50 jewels, shot glasses St Swithins Kate Barn

  18. 100 squares on the backs of loo doors Tidy up bags- count back the contents St Swithun’sindoors

  19. Estimation Station StainesPrep HollieStillman

  20. Estimation station: good guesses? St Augustine’s Louise Davies

  21. Estimation The children estimated the length of the track using unifix cubes. Some children then compared a curved piece of track to a straight piece. Cardinal Newman Gill Williams & Tracy Harvey

  22. The weighing stationCan you balance the scales with the fruit? Cardinal Newman Gill Williams & Tracy Harvey

  23. Balancing marshmallows Wood Street Katherine Potter

  24. CookingMaking chocolate nests- introduced doubling using mini shredded wheat. Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

  25. In the past 10 days we have hosted 14 eggs that hatched into 14 very cute chicks! It has been a great learning experience for the children with maths throughout eg: • Recording the temperature of the incubator. • Counting eggs … and then how many chicks had hatched! Recording it. • Problem solving – if there are 14 eggs and 1 still hasn’t hatched, how many chicks have we got? • Estimation – how many duplo bricks does a chick weigh? (7!) Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

  26. Outdoors- numbers from 10 -20 were hidden in little plastic eggs. The children found the egg, opened it and read the number. They then wrote their own number lines with chalk and jumped along it to the number they had found. Holy Trinity Pewley Down Sheena Preston

  27. Outdoors Paying for bike rides Tesco’s outdoors Rubber number mats Skittles with different sized balls St Swithun’s Kathryn Jones

  28. Voting St James Weybridge Kelly Frost Mary Baratta Lorton (1976) Maths Their Way
