  11. Mrs. Comma

  12. Comma Man Directions 1. Pick a type of “man” or “woman” in our society…football player, doctor, singer, teacher, police man, judge, angel, Easter bunny, etc… 2. Create your comma and then make your “costume” for your comma person. 3. Make a mini poster with at least 4 comma rules. 4. Create a sentence for each rule that is related to your comma person.

  13. If I were a Comma Write a story beginning with “If I were a comma…” Think about these things as you write: How do commas feel when people read over them and don’t pause? How do commas feel when people don’t use them when they should in their writing?

  14. Quotation Marks • Quotation Marks “ ’’ • Quotation marks come in pairs. You need one set of quotation marks at the beginning of the title, dialogue, or quote and you need one at the end.

  15. Quotation Marks Quotation marks surround dialogue/conversation: Examples: “I had a fantastic time at the zoo,” Jill said. Joe said, “I got an A on my math test!” Jill whined, “I’m hungry!”

  16. Quotation Marks Quotation marks surround some titles. Examples: One of my favorite movies is “The Ant Bully.” My brother really likes Fred Penner’s song, “Cat Came Back.”

  17. Quotation Marks • Quotation marks surround some ironies (use with caution): Examples: Jamie is too “busy” to help me! My sister chums with a bunch of ‘girly girls’. She says she “forgot” her homework.

  18. Where do my commas and periods go? • Commas and periods go inside of the quotations marks. “Ninety-four feet,” answered Coach Allen. He added,“It is also 50 feet wide.”

  19. Where do my question marks and exclamation marks go? Question marks and exclamation marks go inside IF they are part of the quote. If not, they will go outside the quotation marks. Example: Emily asked,“How long is a basketball court?”

  20. Practice – How can we correct the following sentences? • “Now it’s time to give out the sports awards” announced the principal. • Our first award goes to Megan,” Coach Thomas said. • Megan exclaimed “I never expected to get an award!” • Her friend replied, “you deserve it.”

  21. Practice – Where do the quotation marks go? • Watch this, the baseball player told his teammate. • The crowd yelled, Do it again! • She’s the best player on our team, explained the coach. • The reporter stated, She’s the best I’ve ever seen. • We should win the game, the coach remarked.
